IT’S HIS FIRST DAY ON the job and, quite frankly, hige isn’t sure what to expect. he’s never really ‘ worked ’ before ─ it was never a necessity when he could simply scavenge or hunt for food. but the resources here are more limited and, without much else to do, hige had decided that working might not be a bad idea.
the ‘ scout ’ position had been the most appealing at the time. it sounded relatively easy ─ simply report on things he found while exploring? no biggie! with a nose like his, hige figured it’d be no problem! . . . until he remembered that his nose hasn’t quite functioned as well as before.
he remembers this far too late after wandering too far off the path ─ his four legs could still carry him pretty far! he’s taken plenty of mental notes about the surroundings ─ places with odd rock formations, large clearings, areas with excess wood... but he never considered how he’d get back. great.
he luckily doesn’t have to wander much longer ─ using visuals to try and find his way back ─ until he spots another younger - looking lad. hige feels a flicker of hope as he trots forward, waving down the stranger.
