buck cries on henry’s first day of kindergarten.

he promised himself the night before while he was packing up his lunch in his brand new lunch box that he wouldn’t. said to tommy that no matter what he wasn’t going to cry. and to buck’s credit, he makes it through most of the morning. makes it through making him very special first day pancakes, through tying up the laces on his new sneakers and packing his backpack for the day ahead. he almost loses it in the car journey, listening to henry ramble about how he’s is so excited to make new friends and meet his teachers.

what does push him over the edge is watching him walk away into his classroom. he’s holding hands with his teacher and he’s turned to face buck and tommy, wave goodbye with an ear splitting grin on his face. and buck absolutely loses it. because henry is not their tiny little baby anymore who just about fits in buck’s arms, he’s a walking, talking little human that has his own thoughts and feelings. he’s four years old now, he’s funny and clever and witty and snarky just like tommy. he growing and learning and it’s going far too quick for buck’s liking. so he cries.

and tommy is there holding him and hugging him all the way back to the car, reassuring him that it’s okay, their baby is going to be okay. but then immediately starts crying as well when they are back in the privacy of the SUV.
