I suppose I lucked out this year with my selection. I made you some chocolates – well, the house elves made you some chocolates, and I did my best to decorate them and make them… Festive.

“is there any way to leave this place?” he asked, looking at the other - he wasn't sure why he was here - or why he had wound up here. he had so many questions that he needed answered and no one he had spoken to so far had been able to help him.

“Just be careful on your way home.” It was falling of deaf ears, of course, but Xenophilius always wished well to his wife. Even when she waved it off as overthinking things, he always had the fear of the worst. It didn’t help that things around them seemed to grow far more dark and bleak as days progressed, and to see how the Order was growing in number made him feel at ease while also feeling more like he wanted to shield her from the world. 

He couldn’t do that, though. Nothing he could offer would stop her from fighting, and it was part of why he was so fond of her. With a defeated sigh, he rubbed at his temples, catching a slightly familiar figure in his view that made him double take for a second. Really, the resemblance among the Black family was almost like it was done through magic than through genetics. He swore he had seen Sirius, but it wasn’t him. For some reason, rather than relief, he felt a bit more on edge that it wasn’t the latter. 

“You--” Xenophilius stopped himself, having to rethink what he was doing. Dora had been rather busy with charms as of late, and she did set up a very extensive barrier around the home. Trouble was, it left very little room for strangers to walk freely without threat of one of the charms causing an immediate reaction. If this person was related to Sirius, that meant there was a higher chance of them being a foe, right? When was it ever the opposite? Save for Andromeda, of course, but she was far from a threat save for the work she did.

In spite of his gut, he did something that was far more in character of his wife than himself. Or, maybe it was her influence that was causing him to be more caring to those that may deserve a second chance. What would he have done to earn a second chance--why would I even care. Xenophilius let out a frustrated sigh, “You shouldn’t move any farther. This isn’t a threat, but I’m afraid my wife can be eccentric in her placement of defense charms. I really would hate for you to be harmed by them, so --” 

So, what? So, now you have to actually help him. Good on you, Xenophilius, you’re taking in strays just like Dora. Pray this one isn’t going to kill you for your bleeding heart. “I can guide you along so you won’t get hurt. You just....have to trust me, is all. Which, isn’t a very easy thing to ask, I’m afraid.”

“what is this place?” she asked, raising a brow as she approached regulus. “and why are there so many fucking muggles?” she spat, looking around them. regulus had always been her favourite, unlike his brother.

“reg?” all of the emotions that she'd felt after his death came flooding back - grief and guilt were the two main ones, sadness over his death and the guilt of not trying to get him away from his parents. “you’re alive.”
