Her arm wrapping around his neck filled him with far too much satisfaction. How easily she stroked his ego. A year ago Lucius never would have imagined feeling this way because of Narcissa. Regardless of the chaos swirling around the rest of the castle, she had the unique ability to ground him in the present moment. She was it. The reason he had joined up in this fight. She was everything he wanted to protect, preserve, and bring prosperity to. She was his future, the future, of their pureblood lineage.
It was almost too much. Things between them had been so strange, so rushed. It had been a surprise to be paired together, both thought another match would be made. It seemed as if they both resisted - her with Borscht and him with Lucinda. But now they shared secrets and nothing brought their kind closer than secrets. She was the only person who knew the depth of his grief and he was the only one who knew hers. It was heavy at times.
But not at this time. The scent of her perfume, her lips curving into a perfect smile, the weight of her against him all came together in the perfect combination to ease his mind of all troubles. He had half a mind to kiss her, but would save that for a more appropriate venue. Her compliments brought a matching smile to his face, “You spoil me. And here I thought that was my job.” He placed his hands on her waist, “I hope your travels were exactly what you needed. Next time, don’t run away without bringing me along.”
As a habit the girl had accidentally picked up at some point in time, she couldn’t help but toy with the silky hair at the nape of his neck. Goodness, she thought to herself. How lucky she was to have been paired with this beautiful boy. Long ago, she had imagined herself growing old with Rodolphus - a match that would have made her feel equally safe, but one that would have lacked the excitement she felt when she thought about Lucius. Rodolphus was more a brother, a best friend to her than he would ever have been a fitting husband. She didn’t know what went into the decision (she heard her father whispering about the Malfoy’s dealings with Muggles in a far away past) but she was glad it had. Now, her lips turned upwards and her heavy lashes batted up at him.
“My dear you spoil me with your presence alone. Would you expect me to return from a trip away without at least attempting to smother you in gifts?,” she teased, an even bigger smile playing at her lips as she spoke. “But don’t worry a second, Lucius Malfoy, every moment away from you was dreadful.” With that, she used a jokingly overdramatic tone. “I’m only joking, I loved every moment of my adventures there, though I truly did miss you, hard as it may be to admit. Come, I found some things you’ll love.” Pulling her bottom lip between her teeth, she fought another silly grin. “But some of them are.... well, for your eyes only.”
Sliding her hand into his, she navigated to a side corridor, with a room many avoided for fear it was haunted. Narcissa never put much stock in being afraid of ghosts, knowing that many of them were far more scared of her than she could ever be of them. Besides, she appreciated that she scared people away from the room with a beautiful stained glass window that cast a rainbow of colors inside on a sunny day. “Now don’t get too excited, they’re probably awful gifts-” she knew they weren’t. “But I saw them and thought of you.” She pulled a bag out of her own bag, the House Elves having taken the rest of her trunks back to her dorm, and handed it to him. Inside was a small flask of 168 year old wine, an assortment of French cheeses (charmed to stay fresh of course), and a small dagger. “That is what was for your eyes only,” she explained when he opened it. “It’s a dark artifact. You won’t believe who it belonged to, it was fate, really, that I found it while shopping for you! And that the man even gave it to me - oh I had to bargain for quite some time-” Excitement bubbled within her before she finally whispered out, “Herpo the Foul! Do you like it? I hope it’s not silly, I know it’s quite small but I couldn’t find anything else that stuck out to me besides Yardley Platt’s amulet so... I hope you like it.”
