Retrospective

Summary: Riza doesn’t want to read glorification of the Ishval Civil War – especially not with her name attached to it.

A short piece in three installments over three days, written to ease into the atmosphere and characters of my Royai Week 2025 fic.

This fic can be read independently, although there are connected stories in the same self-canon. I'll begin posting the RW2025 fic on Ao3 on Monday and will link it at the end of this sequence, but the other, Order 3066, has already been posted in completion.

Part One:

In a 5-year retrospective on the Ishval Civil War, reporter Stephan Gulde strives to build a complete picture of our incredible soldiers. Last week you read his report on the desert conditions endured by the average soldier, biting sandstorms and blistering heat! Today, we present a collection of his interviews regarding the women who served amongst our troops, in roles ranging through transportation, communications, medical and combat. These women have gone on to play integral parts in our society, continuing to make great strides in the military, or in civilian roles as mothers, business owners, and even emergency first responders. Stephan seeks to illuminate the important role women played in helping the war effort, and highlights one of our more prominent individuals, The Hawk’s Eye.

Riza considered just throwing the magazine out. There were better things to do with her time than read propaganda with her name pasted over it. Unpack her boxes. Meet her new neighbours. Finally go grocery shopping. At this rate, she’d have been at Central for a month before she used a frying pan. Instead she readied herself with a biscuit and a cup of tea for fortification, and turned to page twelve.

If Annika hadn’t called to give her a heads up – in warning and apology both – Riza might not have realised they’d gone ahead with their ridiculous article. Scanning for her own name, Riza didn’t linger anywhere she didn’t have to – she already knew what Ishval had been like without some half-cobbled stories – but since her refusal to interview hadn’t diverted them, then she needed to be certain that no unhelpful connections were made that would disrupt her role with Colonel Mustang right when they were already swamped with bureaucracy.

The interviews were conducted loosely, in a style she had to assume provided more space for the subjects to blather on and offer rope to hang themselves with – or her. The descriptions of work in Ishval made her toes curl, teeth grinding as she tried not to sink back into the long, boring, hot, itching days staring through her scope, or the horrible adrenaline of closer encounters.

Interviewees’ names had been shortened to initials, but at the bottom of the first page, where questions about her started to emerge, Riza spent long enough considering what they said that she began to form an idea of who had said what.

S.G.: During her time in Ishval, The Hawk’s Eye became a known and respected figure. As some of the women who shared her first barracks in Ishval, do you think there was any sense of the legend she was going to take on when she first arrived?

[Tamsin]: She certainly wanted to be taken seriously.

[Fala]: That’s true. You hear about some of these lady soldiers with blinders on, only thinking about their jobs and their roles and ...

[Tamsin]: Yes, she was like that.

[Lilah]: And what’s wrong with that? She arrived young. In age, yeah, but more than that. You could see it in her eyes, like she didn’t realise she was going to have to shoot that rifle she arrived with. Not that it stopped her.
