I hate to join the war on Trick Weekes on the side of Trick Weekes, but tbh in regard to the recent discourse about the Hallelujah cadence thing I think we're just at the point in the cycle where the writer is out of favour so everyone always hated everything they did actually. But, the thing is, we've known about this for a decade. This was well known, at least in Solas fan circles, for a decade. And I don't recall anyone complaining about the use of iambic tetrameter before it came out that Hallelujah was used to achieve that. At which point, people are actually just mad that a writer used a method to achieve a desired effect, and they feel like they were tricked because it wasn't done 'properly'. Which. Come on. Why are you making me defend Weekes?

In the Trespasser DLC, we see a rather large spell decimate unknown enemies in a rather extravagant fashion. 

Apologies for no video or gif. 

Now, this effect reminds me, and I’m sure a few others, of mind blast.

Mind Blast, across all games, has an area of effect with a five meter diameter, or about sixteen feet. This means that only enemies within a somewhat personal bubble of yours are thrown onto their asses. 

By using a highly sophisticated series of measurements… 

… and an even more exquisite use of math…

… I have determined the distance between the tower and the Inquisitor to be roughly 2.8 miles, or 4.5 kilometers. The effects of the spell are still felt even at that distance.

In comparison to the five meter spell casting of the above-average mage, this would be 900 times more powerful

This ‘unknown assailant’ is 900 times more powerful than a mage Inquisitor, Champion, or Warden.

I'm running around Tumblr to ask some questions I'm curious about from fellow Solavellan lovers. Answer all or one, up to you!

What does your Lavellan understand about Solas that makes forgiveness possible without excusing what he’s done?

Is there something your Lavellan fundamentally misunderstands about Solas, and that Solas fundamentally misunderstands about your Lavellan? What finally allows them to understand each other more clearly and how does that understanding come?

What is the dynamic between your Lavellan and your Rook?

If your Rook comes to know Solas primarily as an adversary, while your Lavellan’s experience is coloured by their love and history together, where do their interpretations of him overlap - and where do they differ?

Hi! I don't have a Rook, so I'll only answer the first two, thanks for the ask though!

1.What does your Lavellan understand about Solas that makes forgiveness possible without excusing what he’s done?

Well, more or less the first thing that she learned about him is that he's kind, even when it isn't to his advantage. She doesn't believe that anything he's done has been out of malice, because that's not really how he works. There are so many things he's done and said that have no point if he didn't mean them - like heal random refugees, or tell Bull that killing people is, for the most part, a tragedy. Nobody would've cared if he'd agreed with Bull. Nobody would've cared if he hadn't advocated for mercy and freedom. Perhaps he's been wrong, perhaps he's done wrong, but he isn't evil, and that's more than enough.

2. Is there something your Lavellan fundamentally misunderstands about Solas, and that Solas fundamentally misunderstands about your Lavellan? What finally allows them to understand each other more clearly and how does that understanding come?

Well, this is my personal interpretation, but Adah is pretty convinced that Solas wouldn't kill her. Not without reason: it absolutely would've been in his best interests to kill her during Trespasser, which is one of the things that convinces her he cares, but actually if she had gotten properly in the way he would've done it. And probably become the monster that he's convinced he is in doing so. Thankfully they'll never have to find that misconception out. As for Solas, well, he knows very little about her inner struggles in truth, because she never really shared them with him. Not that she's ever shared them with anyone. And he keeps making choices for her, assuming that he knows best. These things will come to light and a climax in the Regret Prison.

Okay I needed to find the source of the Solas speaking to the tune of Hallelujah thing because it's so fucking wild and yet. True. It's true and fully stated by Weekes themself.

In "The Sound and the Fury: What we listened to while writing Dragon Age: Inquisition" posted on the BioWare blog on December 12, 2014, Weekes says the following:

When Solas talks about things that he saw in the Fade, things that speak to a distant past, I needed him to sound ever so slightly otherworldly and wistful – someone remembering a dream with a sense of both sadness and inevitability. So I took k.d. lang’s cover of “Hallelujah”, and I wrote key scenes to that single song on loop. If you follow that link and look at some of Solas’s lines, you may notice a familiar rhythm come out. It would have been forcing it to give lines the same rhyme scheme, but giving the words the meter captured some of that wistfulness and made Solas sound ever so slightly otherworldly. ... (In the rare cases the player got into the same rhythm, there was always an approval bump from Solas. For that brief period, it was like the player was thinking like he did.) I used this a few times over the game, and I love what it did to his voice. Also, Cori (who edited Solas) is exceedingly kind for putting up with my request that changes to those lines keep this surreptitious rhythm.

Anyway yeah I 100% understand how many people can find this more gimmick-y rather than charming. (I'm personally just kinda baffled.)

part of the fun of the original alien is the horror of the nostromo itself imo. it’s a cell of corporate greed ferrying narrowly-trained workers across barren space. it’s huge and yet claustrophobic, cockpits crammed with machinery giving way to yawning berths dripping chains and water. the supercomputer is named mother in a stroke of human anthropomorphization, but instead of providing comfort or protection, it’s only a courier between its creator and its wailing brood. ripley yells “mother! mother!” at a matronly-voiced computer that speaks calmly over her helplessness. the ship is full of endless details and patterns and unlabeled buttons and dials the audience can’t entirely make sense of; to do anything on the ship is a rigorous, technical process, and we must depend on the characters to know it. the internal mechanics of the ship are so alien that a literal alien can hide among the bits and bobs and not be noticed. it’s great.

the distinction between professional and amateur is pay btw. if you get paid for doing it you're doing it professionally. it says nothing about quality. some of the best craftspeople on earth are amateurs and some of the worst writers are professionals.

the thing with a lot of the templars dragon age deems as "good" is that said templars believe the templars as an institution are perfectly fine. instead, it is individual people who are giving the noble templar order a bad name. the rampant abuse in the circles is only the fault of some templars who had "forgotten" the true purpose of the order. if only those bad apples are rooted out, the templar order will be what it "originally" was—nevermind that the whole barrel is rotten.

exactly!! even if you get rid of every single "bad" templar, the practices of the templars themselves are still harmful. every single templar who assaults and rapes mages is expelled from the order. but the order still requires you to watch young mages face demons. the order still requires you to kill young mages if they fail the harrowing. the order still requires you to make mages tranquil. the abuse of mages is built into the duties of templars that there is simply no way for a "good" templar to say the templars should only get rid of the "bad" ones, say thedas should keep the templar order, and still claim to protect mages.
