👶 Peter
#4. Peter Hausman - Born March 15th, 1972
Even as a little one, Peter was clever. He’d quickly figure out puzzles that would take his older brothers hours. He loved to help his father with the family business, memorizing the contents of his toolbox until he could hand his dad whatever he needed without hesitation.
When really young, spending time with his very busy father was pretty much his favourite thing. He loved to be included, he loved the talks they’d have and most of all, he loved listening to the collection of jazz records that he’d attended his father in nabbing from yard-sales and second-hand shops.
Unfortunately, though, over the coming years, his father’s alcoholism took such afternoons away. John Hausman became detached, quick-to-anger, and once, while drinking on the job, nearly injured little Peter, who from then on, was no longer allowed to go to work with him.
Instead, Peter found a love of hockey and skating, though he’d usually play alone on a pond near his house, as his brothers normally weren’t interested in joining, and he was too shy to make many friends with kids in the neighbourhood.
Resourceful and bright as he was, Peter was also an extremely fearful child, with anxieties most his age wouldn’t even consider. It even reached a point where his parents had to put him in therapy to try and overcome some of his more serious phobias.
On top of being cowardly, Peter was small. He was at least half a foot shorter than most boys his age. Then, to top it all off, Peter came from a family with an infamous history. Over the 100+ years that they’d lived in Canada, the Hausman family had lost several members to alcohol and drug addiction. Others found other vices, such as food or gambling. Either way, in Helten, addictive-personality had come to be known as ‘Hausman syndrome’.
All of these made Peter a bit of a bullying target for a couple of years, until one particular day in grade three, when a few cruel kids were repeating to Peter rumors they’d heard about his father and his drinking-- and when Peter started to get upset, two boys stepped in, and… literally weirded the bullies out until they were intimidated into leaving Peter alone.
The two boys, Isaac Salgado and Samuel Angioli, would become Peter’s best friends from then on, not that Peter had much of a choice. The boys were insistent upon it, even showing up at his house shortly thereafter, saying “Come on, we’re going to the lake today.”
Peter, even as a kid, was a wannabe charmer. He’d hand-make corny valentines for girls in his class and leave flowers on their desks, but was usually too nervous to speak to one face-to-face. One in-particular, was bookish classmate Janet Church, whom he was infatuated with for years, but wouldn’t even acknowledge her most of the time, out of fear, which his friends mocked him tirelessly for.
Still, those same friends became an integral support for Peter in the years to come, as his father’s health deteriorated, brought on by his drinking, and he ultimately died when Peter was only fifteen, causing both him and his brothers to have to take over the family business to keep their already struggling family fed.
Unfortunately, from there, many would look upon Peter with pity, which frustrated him more. One of his greatest acts of rebellion against this came a couple of years later, when he swallowed his fear (More-or-less) and asked out childhood crush Janet Church, who actually accepted-- and later, to everyone’s shock, became his girlfriend, which started an unwanted rivalry between him and Jacob Scott, who Janet had rejected multiple times.
