Hey with all the ICE stuff happening I just want to say

If you are adopted, please make sure your naturalization paperwork is correct. Do not trust your parents’ word on your naturalization paperwork being filed correctly.

Mine wasn’t. I didn’t find out until I was well into my 20s. My parents lied to me about my proof of citizenship being legitimate my entire life. I only found out because when I tried to get my passport they couldn’t approve my application, and when I asked my mom about it she finally caved and told the truth. Thankfully this was during the Biden administration so I was able to get everything done without fear of being disappeared, but I can only imagine finding out about this during the current regime.

If you were adopted before February 27, 2001, your paperwork was filed correctly at the time, but your family never updated your paperwork after the government changed several things about naturalization, you are currently eligible to file your paperwork at no cost because of the Child Citizen Act of 2001.

I have a suspicion that the only reason this has yet to be threatened is because it’s an extremely niche edge case which has helped it fly under the radar. The current regime could easily remove this at any time. Please make sure that your papers are up to date and conform to current naturalization requirements even if they decide to change it later. Your case to prove your citizenship will be much harder to refute if your papers are up to date.
