Cracks.
Cracks... His heart holds plenty of those. The dark blue glow from them just barely seen on the surface of his mostly blue heart. Each one growing and branching out, slowly working towards the still pink core of the heart. That isn’t all that is cracked though...
His bones are cracked as well. Hairline fractures and deep knicks and cuts. Normally Lewis would be able to heal. To fall into the ghost version of rest and wake up with the damages gone. He can’t do that anymore. His natural healing falling away as his heart cracks more and more. As he seems to grow more and more tired.
And Lewis is tired. So very tired. He and his friends, though the ghost is starting to lose this term, have been going on so many cases. They have been going against cults, demons, evil spirits, and all sorts of creatures. He can’t remember the last time they had a simple case that didn’t have danger looming over it.
He has been taking more and more hits for them, protecting them from harm. Healing them because he still cares enough to do so and it is those feelings alone that allow him to still heal others. And Lewis can only watch, tired and in pain, when the mission is done and they go back to the van without one word of thanks or worry for him.
Lewis’ unhealing injuries are effecting him, ghost or not. One of his shoulder joints got damaged bad enough that he now can’t fully move that arm around unless he really wants to. One of his leg bone got cracked all the way through and now he either floats to move around in private or limps when in public.
Several smaller bones are missing and his skull and breast bones are severely cracked, little pieces missing. Lewis’ flames are not as strong as they once were and the glow from his ‘eyes’ and flame hair is dim...
He watches as they walk back to the van, another case finished, and Lewis holds an arm over his ribs. One rib has a new crack running along it while another seems to be missing entirely. For the first time, the ghost has to wonder why are they taking so many cases like this?
The answer he thinks of sends a sharp pain through his heart and he looks at them with wide sad eyes. What if they were taking all these cases... because they wanted to wear him down? To get him to save them, protect them, use up all his energy, to possibly disappear.
Are they hoping that the next case, or the one after that, will be the one to end him? These thoughts pain him and Lewis can see how this would all fit. His friends are subtly getting him to off himself by going on these cases. The ghost feels a sharp pain run through him at this and he looks down to the pocket he holds his delicate heart in.
Lewis reaches in and carefully, gently, brings the highly cracked heart out. He holds it and can only watch in deep sadness as the blue completely overruns the pink color and the cracks reach the core. It is in his hands that the heart shakes before falling apart, some of the pieces falling out of his hand and onto the ground.
He doesn’t disappear, but that would have been better. He now feels hollow and empty, unfeeling as he watches the pieces of his heart turn to dust in his hand and get blown away. Taking one last look at his old friends, he just stares blankly before turning and limping off and into the forest, his form melding into the shadows soon enough.
