closed starter for @collinsapsley // sunday after the storm // hospital
Harley didn't have much information about the aftermath of the storm. He had no idea how many people had been hurt or killed, or what most of the town looked like. His parents had been talking about it all day, but whenever he asked them to fill him in they just brushed him off. I'll tell you later, he'd read on his dad's mouth. To his mom's credit, he was pretty sure she tried to fill him in. But he couldn't understand anything she was saying.
There was so much to like about Aurora Bay. The salty air, the constant changing waves of visitors, the small town vibes. This was home, and he didn't regret coming back. He often forgot he was the only deaf local. But there were times when he was very cognizant of the fact he didn't have the community here that he had in New York. Navigating the last couple days without his implant - especially having been at his parents' house for much of that - made him desperately miss the Deaf company of New York City.
But he knew he was still lucky. Despite Aurora Bay's lack of a deaf world, there was at least a sizeable signing community in town. Many people he surrounded himself with either knew sign language, or were learning it because they were friends with him and he appreciated that. Collins, a friend he'd met in New York who learned to sign right along side of him, was one of those people. When she told him she was in the hospital, he wasted no time taking an uber to see her.
Once in the hospital, he used his phone to type to a nurse that he was looking for Collins Apsley. She spoke to him, then held up her finger and walked away. A moment later she came back with a nurse that could sign. Sort of. Her signs were slow and disjointed but he appreciated that she knew enough to take him to Collins room. On the way he noticed the hospital was busier than usual, but nowhere near as bad as he had anticipated. The nurse explained to him that most injuries they were seeing weren't that bad.
As he finally entered the blonde's room, he peaked his head in. She didn't look too bad. The injury was on her leg, which was hidden by the hospital bedding. She was awake enough to be texting him a few minutes before that. "Hey," he said, using his voice to get her attention, then switched to sign-only. "The good news is, this nurse signs!" Harley gleefully pointed to the nurse who for some reason was still standing there. "The bad news is, she told me the zombie lion bit you and the only way to stop the infection from spreading is to cut the leg off."
