Alex had only been checking on Kara’s apartment out of habit. She hadn’t actually expected to find anything awry. To say she was shocked, as she took a slow stroll along the corridor, to see a kid trying to break into her sister’s apartment, would be an understatement. Alex’s hand went straight to her gun, not fooled by appearances. Child did not mean human, and therefore child did not mean weak. She approached the would be intruder, taking small, light steps. She wanted to keep her element of surprise.
As she neared, she realised that she recognised him. Her hands fell away from her gun as she realised that, for whatever reason, Carter Grant was trying to force entry into Kara’s apartment. His method was shoddy, and Alex knew he had no chance of ever picking the lock but that was irrelevant. The intention was there. Alex placed her hands on her hips then cleared her throat to make her arrival known. She chose not to speak, just gave Carter a hard stare. Her eyebrows were raised in a questioning manner.

Unexpected Supergirl business had forced Kara to head out even though she had made plans to watch Carter that night. “Something came up at work,” she explained as she hung up and pocketed her phone. “But I ordered pizza and Kara’s told me you love Settlers of Catan.” She took the box from one of the shelves in the living room and turned to look at the teenage boy. “How good are you?” she asked, a daring tint to her voice. “Because I’m great at strategy games.”
