Is it that he subconsciously believes her and still sees her as pure and blameless, or just bad storytelling? Oh, The Musketeers.

Right? It must have been deliberate because the only way you keep a dress like that pristine when shooting with blood is by actively trying to do that, but why?

The idea that it’s a product of his imagination is interesting -- and rather telling, especially with when this flashback falls relative to certain later actions -- but at the same time I’m not sure I’d give the show that much credit, after its absolute and utter lack of subtlety in other places. It makes having a good meta think so much more difficult.
