Understatement of the century.

Reyna never looks anything less than resolute and dependable. A perfect leader - straight backed, standing tall, composed, and ready to take the minotaur by the helm no matter what problem is raising its ugly head. So it's not that she looks any less put together than she would on a better day - it's just that Jason knows her better by now. They've gone through too many quests and late nights making battle plans and early mornings on the training ground for Jason to miss the little signs.

There's a softness under her eyes that means she's tired; Reyna doesn't let puffiness or dark shadows show and reveal any kind of weakness - and Jason has seen her press cold water to her eyes for long enough to keep them looking alert before going out for the day. But he sees the barest hint of swelling and he knows. She tends to lean her head to the right more often because when she sleeps poorly she gets a knot in the junction of that shoulder. She'll take an extra pause before speaking, making sure her words are in order and she doesn't let something slip.

Reyna Ramirez-Arellano is a consummate shoulder and paragon of a leader, and that's why she needs someone looking out for her. Who can make it look like he's not looking out for her.

Jason had seen the portends of this happening - a restlessness in her yesterday that meant a poor night was coming. A few moments of snapping something she'd meant to say. And a groggy morning when they'd trained this morning at dawn. He doesn't know if it's the growing shadow of Mount Othrys on the horizon, or if it's more personal ghosts that are bothering her, but either way he's ready.

For her to admit it, though ? Concern twists through him; it must be dire.

❝ Same, ❞ he says mildly. It's a little true - he'd been getting more and more frequent dreams about lightning cracking through the sky and reaching for the mountain peak, but he's not in any particularly bad shape. He mostly says it to immediately reassure her that he won't poke at things she's so desperate to keep hidden. Solidarity, not sympathy. ( even if he has sympathy in spades. )

Jason takes a seat next to her in the offices they've been using to strategize for the upcoming war - and drops a paper back on the desk alongside two coffee cups, largest size. Inside the bag, you can see glimpses of the cafe's chocolate croissants and tiger claws. ( jason learned her order the first time he found her studying there. ) To make it look casual, he grabs one of the croissants for himself.
