Kai moved around his kitchen effortlessly, grabbing a box of Triscuits, three packets of string cheese, and a bowl. His mother had asked him if the person coming over was of any importance, but all he could do was scoff. Ofelia was...a friend? An acquaintance? Kai wasn’t even sure, but he did know that she was just as impulsive as he was, and that was what mattered.
A light tapping at the door, and Kai could see his parents answering it together; probably doing an extremely noticeable once-over. Through the back window, he waved at her, hoping she could get the hint to go straight into the backyard. “Some cheese and crackers,” he mumbled. “That’s fancy as shit.” He was actually impressed with himself. Taking a quick hit from his pen, Kai sat down in one of the old patio chairs and began to open up a cheese stick.
