Writing Game: Last Lines

I was tagged by @tanoraqui for this one! Last lines from the last 10 finished works I posted, not counting collaborations, starting with the most recent:

Cassandra gives a brisk nod to her reflection in the mirror, and turns to head downstairs to welcome her guests into her home. (forgive us the days forgotten to fear, Critical Role Campaign 1)

The stone he sets down carefully on top of the grave marker, among the handful of other little stones left there by other visitors, before he turns to go. (Letters, Critical Role Campaign 2)

And he should stop there, he really should, but the next words are already coming out: Maybe you should try friends sometime. (Cantrip: Friends, Critical Role Campaign 2)

“Maker help me,” she -- giggles, actually giggles -- “if Varric finds out, I’ll never hear the end of it.” (black on white, crow in snow, Dragon Age: Inquisition)

The management here at the Hanged Man never takes noise complaints all that seriously, but still, you’re inclined to hope later that the room next door is empty. (fly away you dainty dish, Dragon Age II)

A general murmur of agreement went up, and not even Dvora seemed inclined to argue. (a line to yourself or a place on the shelf, Tanakh / Hebrew Bible)

I feel like I can see some patterns here, but they're mostly things I already knew -- my tendency to use present tense for fic based on games, and second person for fic about video game protags specifically. I am not sure I could explain why sometimes my dialogue is marked by italics rather than in quotation marks.

Hi! Question, would you mind if someone used your analogy about a a character being like a chihuahua in a fight? I have a combat scene between two characters, and one of them is basically like a chihuahua, so the description is perfect. He's small and yappy while being surprisingly hard to actually injure.

I would not mind at all! I'd love to have a look the scene when it's written, if you'd be okay with that.

hey reminder that if a partner doesn’t want to personally seek out more relationships than their partner something isn’t necessarily horribly wrong. some people are very content in themselves so seeking other people all the time is an actual effort. some of us are just autistic. i like hanging out with my partner’s friends! i am not lonely when my partner isn’t around or is busy. i am very happy with myself and actually forget to interact with people most of the time because for me it’s usually an effort or obligation. with my partner it ISNT, i actually love and remember without difficulty to communicate and be around them!! that’s how i knew i wanted to be committed to this person. when i was single there wasn’t anything wrong with me either. i just get comfy in my solitude, which is something allistics could see as a gift rather than a curse, but they won’t..

You know what, that's fair. A situation where someone is comfortable in solitude isn't the same as a situation where someone has a constant/frequent need for companionship but is only willing to take it from one other person, and it's the latter I was thinking of. I didn't specify, and that's on me.

I'm introducing a friend of mine to filk (she was complaining that too many songs are about romance and I seized my chance) - she wants songs about scholars/librarians/stoic characters and I can't think of any. Do you happen to have any recs? Thank you!

Hmmm. Nothing comes immediately to mind, largely because I am extremely wiped out today, but I suspect if I throw this out to my followers and consult people on the filk Discord server I'll get some good answers! Whereas if I just put this in my drafts folder, who knows if I'll ever get back to it.

Speaking of which: yes, #filkhaven is a Discord server for the filk community, and an excellent place to meet filkers! As a rule, whenever I get a question about filk recommendations that I can't answer adequately, they're my first go-to.

Someone has sent me an anonymous ask calling me annoying -- which is entirely fair, I've been annoying to a non-trivial subset of the human race for over four decades and I certainly don't intend to stop now -- and demanding that I block them.

Demanding I block them, I must reiterate, by way of an anonymous ask.

I ... I'm not sure they understand how blocking works.

You and a couple anons asked me this so HERE GOES.

The short short form: Frodo, with the Ring, is irretrievably separated from the Fellowship in Moria but not taken by orcs. Sauron doesn't get the Ring back, which is what keeps this from being the Actual Darkest Timeline -- but without destroying the Ring, our side doesn't have a viable way to fight the military strength of Mordor except as a long, slow losing battle. Ten years down the line, things are ... not good.

We never actually wrote this out in full, but somewhere I have a file with many, many pages of notes. Including songs (because have you met me?), where each member of the Fellowship is now and what they've been up to, and the fates and/or current states of many significant secondary characters. ... And if I start going on about it, this ask will never get answered, so I'm gonna go ahead and post it like this, and maybe say more about it another time.

(The friends who were my two primary collaborators on this are on tumblr, but I'm going to let them decide if they want to identify themselves.)
