“We’ve all been around long enough to stand on our own feet without the group existing. That doesn’t mean I want us to disband, but if we did, it wouldn’t be an unscalable obstacle. I’d keep doing what I’m doing in acting, modeling, performing. If it was a natural disbandment where we decided to go our separate ways for some reason or there was a big scandal another member was involved in that ruined the group, I’d stay with Gold Star. I have a lot of loyalty for them, but I wouldn’t stay around longer than I’m obligated to if they were to disband us out of nowhere for no reason and without notice. It’d be common courtesy to discuss it with us first.”

👀 + if you could pick one drama role vs one brand deal vs one solo song, what would it be and why? and what would be said role / deal / song

“I’d keep a drama role. Acting is where I’m most established, so it’d be the hardest to build up all over from scratch. I’m fond of all of my roles, but I might keep Lee Jian in My Mister. Some people still call that my most legendary role, so I wouldn’t want it to be erased.”

👀 + given the chance to fall in love or pursue another stint in a career avenue, what would you choose?

“Career comes before love for me. I don’t like the idea that people, especially women, have to choose between the two, but if I have to choose, my career will always come first. Relationships can be fun, but they don’t keep a roof over your head or give you the same personal fulfillment.”

“My Gentle Monster collaboration had the concept of a childhood dollhouse, so that theme was my main inspiration in all of my creative decisions. I kept in mind that I wanted to create something I would want to wear. If I didn’t, then how I could expect consumers to?”

👀 + do you feel pressure to be a top actress?

“I don’t want to be a forgettable actress, that’s for sure. But pressure is subjective. I want to be considered a top actress, but I’m not dealing with unbearable stress because of where I currently am on my journey to that.”

“It’s complicated. She’s confusing as a person. I’ll never be able to understand her and that pisses me off.”

“Sure. I’m confident because I have to be if I want to get anywhere, but I’m not conceited.”

👀 + have you ever felt wronged by your group? if yes, when was it and how did you deal with it?

“No. Even if I had an issue with one member, it wasn’t as if the whole group had turned on me and wronged me.”

👀 + how would you rank the groups that debuted around the same time as you (selene, calypso, lily, titan, platinum, polaris)

“I have to rank Selene first by virtue of having pride in what I’ve worked for. After us would come Lily. They’re the nation’s girl group. Where else am I supposed to put them? The boy groups can all tie. Polaris has become the most successful, but I have a soft spot for Platinum and Titan is the strongest when ranking on sheer idol ability. If I’m doing a ranking, success has to be taken into consideration and they never really kept up with the rest as an idol group, so Calypso has to be put last, but they have the most momentum and mobility in the ranking, so they could beat out one or all of the boys with time.”

👀 + do you think you're qualified to be someone else's role model and how does that affect you?

“Sure. That’s not something I get to decide and if someone sees me as a role model, I’ll do my best to be a person I would consider to be a role model. Whether I remain their role model or they change their mind is up to them. I won’t compromise myself to be a better role model, but I won’t change myself to deter anyone from looking up to me either.”

👀 + what was the inspiration behind "bloom?" what made you believe that it was the perfect solo debut song?

“I can’t say for sure everything the songwriters and creative directors had in mind, but I did speak to them in-depth about it. I wanted my solo debut to be different from what was expected of me, but for it to still make a statement. A lot of people view me as someone with a ‘girl crush’ image. “Bloom” is a ‘girl crush’ song, but not in the way that term is usually applied. Female sexuality is often portrayed as this dark, sinful, tempting, torturous thing. I’d be interested in dissecting that idea on its own one day, but for my debut, I wanted to portray sex and sexuality for women as something beautiful and pleasurable that doesn’t have to be hidden in the dark. But it doesn’t hit you over the head with that message. It’s fun to listen to and to watch because my goal is to entertain at the end of the day.”

👀 + how would you respond if one of your ex-lovers wrote / released a song about you?

“Who’s to say none of them have already? I don’t care. As long as they don’t name drop and try to come for my career, it’s none of my business. I draw from real life experiences and emotions in my acting. I’d see it as the same as that.”

“I worked with a director who’s quite well-known and wildly successful on Parasite, so I’d want to tap into his mind and see how it works. A sneak peak into the mind of a so-called genius, you could say. There’s got to be at least something for me to learn going on in there.”

“I didn’t know anyone was calling me that. I know a lot of my diehard fans are gay women, but I won’t pretend to think it’s a title I’ve really worked to earn. But anyone who wants to call me that is welcome to.”

👀+rank the female dancers in the industry by your personal opinion of their dance skills.

“There are a lot of female dancers in the industry and I’m sure I don’t know anywhere close to all of them, so I’ll stick to the first few that come to mind first. I’m not that into the idea of pitting women against each other when people on social media are already happy to compare us on the littlest details, but from what I’ve seen, I’d put Candy’s Alice first because she’s very impressive for her age. Equinox’s Kiana would be second. I’m not familiar enough with lead dancers to definitively rank them, but I’ll say Candy’s Kat is somewhere below Kiana but slightly above Yena, if I had to guess on memory. They could be tied.”

“Being in entertainment means there’s a lot of opportunistic creeps ready to abuse their power. Women are a core, vital part of the entertainment industry, but it’s largely controlled by men. But those are both true in any industry. Anything I’d have to say about what’s the worst aspect of the industry would be a reflection on the worst parts of the society as a whole. It wouldn’t be industry-specific.”

performance is pretty much inarguably mirae’s greatest strength as an idol. she doesn’t make lists for the greatest idol dancers or vocalists as much as some others do, and when she does, it tends to be a result of the halo effect of her performance abilities. you wouldn’t find mirae admitting that as readily, but the truth is that mirae is more of a great performer with above (idol) average dance and vocal skills than the paragon of purely artistic talent some of her more passionate fans like the paint her as. for instance, when her mushroom chocolate performance went viral, the comments were more about her captivating energy or her sexiness than being an impressive technical dancer. (the traits that make mirae such a good performer also lend themselves to her abilities as an actress. she’s an expert at emoting with her body and face and can embody different characters with relative ease.)

over the years, mirae has improved both as a dancer and a vocalist and she enjoys both dancing and singing, but performing will always win out as what she really enjoys. her youtube is a good example of this. she’s done both dance and vocal covers, but they’re almost always carefully planned to be a performance, with lighting, a specific location to emit a certain vibe, and a specially chosen styling. she loves the spectacle of it all and she honestly wouldn’t be so dedicated to it if she could only do covers with a webcam in a practice room. it wouldn’t give her the same adrenaline rush.
