“agent mokele?” almost immediately, gail regretted not having omitted the habit of addressing him by his codename. but it was too late -- she could feel some heat in her face already, and simply wished she’d shed that custom by her interaction with the next agent. “i wanted to ask if i could take a look at cynthia sato’s autopsy report. i know that is your area, so i promise not to step on your toes.”

while the case itself was enough to throw her off, having just left the vicinity of ‘ dad ’ had only fueled more discomfort in her. she wondered if it ever got easier ( by the looks of it, it did ) but now, her disposition had been left jumpy. turning around without enough spatial awareness, almost walking into gregor startled her slightly. the display of suprise didn’t really help, given how their past interactions had gone. 

“sorry, i almost ran into you,” a soft, albeit awkward laughter escaped her lips. “i assume you’ve talked to that ‘ dad ’ guy too?”

while she had let her eyes scan the scene over and over, focusing on a subject before shifting over to something else, gail had only managed to make herself something akin to motion-sickness. it seemed that the world had cracked open and that the team was trying to weave it back together, all before her eyes, one clue at a time. 

   “ye— ingrid?” she extended, her polite smile somewhat bashful. “how is the investigation going? i mean, i know it’s still so early to tell but... well, you’ve supervised hundreds of cases already, so how does this one... feel?”

“why is it that we’ve all been brought over?” her words, rather than bitter, were tinted with the slightest shade of frustration. as exciting as it was to get to see the evidence first-hand, part of her had expected for the to be a chance to put some space between the two. at least for a moment. “i thought the lab technicians would wait somewhere else while you agents came to the scene.”

“did something out of what we knew turn up in the BPA?” asking questions had become a coping mechanism by now, serving the purpose of getting to know others better and using their expertise as some sort of guidance.  whichever semblance of adaptation was out the moment everyone seemed to seamlessly fall into their routines — the questioning, the evidence collection, the ease with which they carried themselves in spite of the chaos that permeated. “god, i’m sorry – i’m intruding like that and not even offering... uhh, would you like some coffee?”

“are all cases like this?” the woman inquired, curious – yet ever-so-tired – eyes placed on the brunet; she furrowed, like an impatient kid trying a puzzle with missing pieces all throughout. “what i mean is.... have the previous investigations been more straightforward than this? given this group’s history of odd incidents, i’d have no idea where to even begin looking.”
