      “  how  long  have  you  been  out  here  ?  ”  she’s  not  one  to  make  friends  easily  (  or  make  small  talk  well  )  but  there’s  something  about  the  man,  for  the  first  time  ever,  that  makes  her  remain  CALM.  their  initial  meeting  had  involved  their  guns  of  course  but  they  had  quickly  come  to  an  agreement.  the  space  they  had  BOTH  found  could  be  shared  for  the  night  along  with  some  supplies  as  long  as  neither  of  them  tried  to  harm  the  other. 

     which,  in  retrospect,  maybe  wasn’t  the  BRIGHTEST  idea.  anyone  could  promise  anything  in  this  world  and  then  kill  you  the  moment  you  turned  your  back.  it  was  just  survival.  she  UNDERSTOOD  it  entirely.  “  and  have  you  always  been  alone  ?  ”

he hates to pass judgement based on appearances, but he’s towering over this girl who he estimates has to be just barely past her teens -- if that. gaze pans over her once more, then scans their surroundings. he doesn’t see anything suspicious, but in this line of work, it’s better to be cautious.

‘  wanna talk about it?  ’  he assumes not, because el isn’t much of a talker, but it’s always good to ask, because mike is very much a listener. he cards his fingers through her hair, careful not to snag the tangles. they’ll worry about the smashed plates later.

" she takes a step forward and stumbles; hand reaching back to grasp his arm. fuck. maybe she wasn't fine. her ankle ached something fierce in her boot and she was sure the second that thing came off, it would fall apart completely. " fuck, fuck, fuck. " the muttered string of curses slips free with ease as she slowly tries to apply more pressure. if they could just get somewhere safe, she could rest. she wouldn't need to rely on him.

her stubbornness drags her forward another step.

again, she stumbles. her grip tightens on his arm once more and a heavy sigh escapes her lips. she wouldn't get anywhere without relying on him. shit. she hated admitting she was wrong for any reason.

there’s  an  ache  in  her  bones  but  she  keeps  GOING;  pushing  on  and  on  and  on  in  hopes  of  some  kind  of  end  goal.  some  kind  of  safety.  but  for  weeks  and  months  on  end,  there’s  been  NOTHING.  no  light  at  the  end  of  the  tunnel.  no  HOPE.  she’s  been  alone  and  away  from  PEOPLE  for  so  long  that  it’s  drained  her  beyond  belief.  

but  there’s  something  about  the  man  she  spots  wandering  into  the  store  she’s  been  searching  that  piques  her  interest.  she’s  not  sure  what  it  IS,  exactly,  that  makes  her  CURIOUS  but  she  doesn’t  run  away  from  the  feeling  quite  yet.  she  freezes  and  goes  SILENT  as  he  scopes  the  place  out.  at  least  for  a  moment. there’s  a  worry  that  fills  her  suddenly  that  he’ll  shoot  before  he  SPEAKS.  something  she’s  grown  used  to  over  the  years. 

“  don’t  shoot  me.  ”  evie  shifts  to  hold  a  hand  out  from  behind  the  shelf  she’s  been  digging  through;  voice  scratchy  from  disuse.  she  had  spoken  to  herself  on  more  than  one  occasion  but  never  enough  to  keep  her  vocal  cords  happy.  “  i’m  just  looking  for  some  food.  ”
