honestlyyy it's very apparent the amount of racism that exists in the dismissal of yuri on ice as gay rep, because it's a GENUINELY groundbreaking show with a canon kiss, engagement, adult relationship talk, and it's NOT for kids, it's NOT watered down, the romance is very much a part of the plot from the very first episode and not something just tacked on. in terms of themes and emotional maturity and execution it's far closer to black sails and killing eve but it's grouped with she-ra and even. gags. voltron. if not incorrectly treated as queerbaiting as first place!

there's something seriously insidious about how wrongly yoi is represented, something that wouldn't happen if it were by a western studio (or if it weren't animated but that's for another day).

my guy, not only are they teens, not kids, most ppl who ship re//ddie(censoring cause im tired of ppl clogging up the tag) have seen the original and read the book. we ship adult reddie as well. which we see. them. as adults. and how much you wanna bet a lot of reddie shippers are teens themselves. and when it comes to harrasing the cast how about going after those mil//even shippers that harrass finn and millie.

Oh shit I forgot about this in my inbox. If you’re reading this, anon, I hope you know that even though I’m only 20 going on 21, I already see anyone before the age of 17 as children. I guess the technical term is “minor”, yeah. But with all due respect, as someone that’s been in fandom since I was about the Losers’ ages in the film (they’re not even teens in the book, they’re preteens there, so let’s keep the discourse to the film for now) I do think there’s a difference between shipping characters as adults and shipping them as kids. Teen romances usually don’t last beyond summer flings, and yeah illustrating those ephemeral but intense emotions (a la The Fault in Our Stars) or selling the adorable angle of highschool sweethearts are formulae that work thanks to its universality. But people change so much between the ages of 13 and 21, I honestly cannot understand how people can take characters they’ve known as adults and ship them in a preteen/teenaged setting with the same logic - especially if there’s been a timeskip of the years in between. Minds just don’t work the same at a younger age, and are definitely very much different from their characters at an older age. And so

(1) my problem isn’t with the teenaged shippers shipping Reddie, I’m sure it’s very relatable for them(2) my problem is with older readers who read the book a long time ago - whether as adults or children, because by now you guys should have grown up and be able to understand the problem with shipping preteen romances like they’re older than they actually are

And yeah, this discourse is complicated by the fact that the preteen characters are portrayed by real kids with their own lives separate from fiction. I’m not familiar with fandoms shipping characters in live-action settings but from what I’ve witnessed in the Superwholock fandom, in the Star Wars fandom, and in the Harry Potter fandom, none of them cross the line and start applying the same shipper logic to the actors. so

(3) yeah, I may not have seen ST but I’m sure I will hold the same criticisms against fans shipping the kid actors there if I’m in that fandom.

And hey, I was in YouTube and Bandom RPF communities once, I know the fine line between keeping it to our circles and harassing the celebrities with our fantasies - and I’ve definitely seen fans do the latter. Not to mention, they’re still underaged, so they definitely shouldn’t be dealing with this kind of objectification (even if it’s not the sexual kind) from fans that are older than them - because, obviously, that’s predatory af. and it’s not okay for the underaged actors to be receiving objectification like that from fans their age, either (as is the case with adult fans shipping adult celebrities). it’s really disrespectful to both these kids as autonomous human beings and LGBT+ teens having a hard time out there - the latter because shipping real people does fetishise q*eer people and trivialise LGBT+ issues.

(there is a reason i’m not in RPF fandoms anymore.)
