the church has her harvesting this season’s root vegetables under the harsh, relentless sun. it’s almost impossible for ana maria to dress for this sort of weather; there’s sweat in her hair and at her brow, and as she reaches up to wipe some away, she leaves behind a smear of dirt from the back of her gardening glove.
