hank schrader is one of my favorite characters of all time. he’s got a deep-seated sense of justice and he loves his wife and family. he’s also a prick racist misogynist cop who starts emotionally battering his wife whenever he feels his masculinity is threatened. 

the way he treats marie when he’s recovering from being shot is inexcusable. marie sticks with him, because often it’s love’s prerogative to excuse the inexcusable. but christ if their marriage isn’t largely a perfect illustration of the fucked up double standard between men and women in relationships with each other, even when that relationship is rooted in genuine love.

you think if marie was the one confined to a bed hank would be holding the bedpan while she takes a shit? yeah fucking right. but men aren’t taught to consider that type of thing as a potential condition of caring for someone. i doubt taking on that task would even occur to him.
