Her eyes kept drifting to the doors of the break room as she hoped to remain undisturbed as she gathered her thoughts. She refocused herself on the computer in front of her and reread the same short paragraph for the hundredth time.
It is with great sadness that I announce my resignation as the Administrative Assistant to the CEO and marketing department of this great company. Due to a number of personal commitments and circumstances, I hereby deliver my two weeks’ notice with the acknowledgement that I will be forfeiting any commission benefits and bonuses earned in this time. I have learned a great deal in my short time here and I appreciate the opportunities given to me by my supervisors. I will happily train and prepare my successor with any necessary information to make this change as seamless as possible.
Charlie drew her hand down her face, closing her eyes to relieve herself of the nasty headache that seemed to be constant when she was on work premises. Charlie had high expectations for this job and had every intention of staying here permanently; at least that was until she had her final interview and realized it was Tyler’s company. Things weren’t all bad. They’d formed a renewed friendship separate than the one they’d forged in high school quite quickly and she’d even made amends with Luke, seeing him as a sort of friend. However the quick friendship between Charlie and Tyler eventually had her feeling just like she had in high school; the feeling of wanting him and wanting to please him, more worried about his thoughts than her own. She wasn’t the weak pushover she was seen as in high school but she could sense herself falling down the rabbit hole.
On top of that, she had to deal with Colie. The woman seemed to show up daily just to make Charlie’s life more difficult; treating her like her personal assistant, downplaying her personal worth, and talking to her like she was the lowest person on Earth. Charlie could deal with a lot, even going toe to toe with the woman on occasion; but it was definitely becoming too much, too fast dealing with her. She didn’t know how much Tyler had seen or heard between his wife and herself but he had to know of something with how often it was occurring on the property.
Charlie almost felt as if she was being hazed nonstop. She’d been late to meetings, lost various necessary items for presentations, and on more than one occasion had her clothes ruined; all because of Colie. With tension with Colie high at all times and inner turmoil with her thoughts of Tyler, Charlie was having trouble focusing on herself and work; which led to the resignation letter she’d been drafting for the past week. She didn’t want to leave her job but she didn’t know what else she could do. Shutting her computer down, letter remaining in her drafts, she leaned back in her chair, still stuck on whether she would go through with leaving or trying to deal a little bit longer.
“God Charlie, why couldn’t you just have stuck with cheerleading? You could’ve been living easy without a demon constantly on your back” she talked to herself, hating the position she was in. “Blondie! Peterson, you’re not being paid to sit around” she heard the yell from the reception area. “Think of the devil and she shall appear” she muttered, grabbing her things and returning to her desk to deal with Colie once again.
