   the charging dock is tucked away beneath a couch cushion, giving her the appearance of a homemaker who’s fallen asleep, still sitting, on the couch after a long, arduous day. it isn’t so far from the truth; though the only thing that continues to give her problems she might find joy in fixing is the garden, with its weeds and its pests.

the faint glow of the fridge alerts her; pulls her out of artificial sleep.

The heating in the house hasn’t been switched on in some months, because knowing it’s cold and feeling it are not the same thing. Tadao rarely switched it off; call this balance.

It’s not very hard to get into the garden; there’s a low fence and a gate she doesn’t really bother to lock. The house, however, is something of a fortress when it’s locked down. She’s been watching him watching the bees that buzz around her flowers for some time, wondering if he knows she’s there.
