Toby never intended to be a lawyer. He had no real passion for the profession, and had only continued his work because he found that he was admittedly fairly good at it. Nevertheless, this disinterest in the job left Toby spending most of his time in the office - when not drowning in paperwork - fantasizing about being literally anywhere else.
Today the location of choice was nowhere exotic, just his cozy apartment. What he wouldn’t give when sitting amidst a pile of murder charges and larceny to just disappear back to his armchair and doze the rest of the day. Though it worried him how much of an old man he sounded, Toby wasn’t about to start worrying about mid-life-crisis-es and instead indulged the simplistic fantasy.
He could feel it now; the soft upholstery, the rain on the window near-by, his cat sleeping on his lap. Toby closed his eyes and leaned back in his office chair to try and add to his imagination when all of a sudden there was a rush of air. His ears were ringing and when he opened his eyes to figure out what had just happened, it shocked him to see that he was somehow actually in his comfy armchair - halfway across the city from his workplace.
Toby jumped up from the chair and looked around the room. This definitely was his apartment, even though that made absolutely no sense. He had no recollection of leaving the office, and yet, the evidence was against him. “I’m sure there’s a reasonable explanation…” Toby said to the cat, who was staring at him with a tilted head. “No need to jump to conclusions…” Conclusions like I just blacked out or I just fucking teleported or What if I'm a Special . Before he started panicking, Toby reached for his phone and messaged Cole, figuring if there was anything "Special" going on here, his son would be be the best person to go to.
