I came up with another example of a mythology gag that wasn’t listed on the SoW tvropes page:

Minas Ithil has fallen when Castamir, the father of Idril, tried to “buy” her safety, and thus betrayed the city to the Witch-King.

Gondolin has fallen when Maeglin, the cousin of Idril, tried to “buy” her love, and thus betrayed the city to Morgoth.

Both traitors were slain in sight of the respective Idrils.
