Three years was a long time to feel guilty for something that wasn’t your fault in the first place. Mackenzie would have laughed at the irony in other circumstances. Maybe if he wasn’t being released today. Her mother royally screwed both of their lives before disappearing without so much as a goodbye or thank you. Back when her mother had been dating Ryan, he’d taken the blame and even gone to jail in her place. After he got sent away, her mother took off leaving her to feel indebted to the man who sat in a cold cell day in and day out. She’d even taken to writing back and forth with him but could never go as far as going to see him. That just felt like a step too far. Although now it would be unavoidable. He was due by any time now. Her blue eyes scanned her living room, wondering if she should have done more to prepare.

“Shit. Is the sun out?” Mackenzie groaned as she leaned against the side of the car. “I guess I lost track of time. Tell me you brought coffee?”

Mackenzie sat on the hotel bed, staring at the man she’d spent a very long and exhausting night with who’d just told her that the bachelor party they met at last night had been in fact for him. “That’s funny. I think you said that you are the bachelor but that can’t be true cause that would mean you’re getting married soon. And I’m pretty sure we had sex last night.”

Mackenzie was propping herself up with the wall, minding her own business when a guy approached her. This is exactly why she hadn’t wanted to come at all. There was only one guy she wanted flirting shamelessly with her and this idiot wasn’t it. “Yeah, I get that all the time actually. I’m starting to think guys lose their minds when a girl can fix her own car.” Her blue eyes were scanning the party to see if she could find him.

Mackenzie sat in the kitchen eating her ice cream and sulking. She’d done a lot of that in the past few months. Ever since her father had married her off in some twisted mafia shit that she had always wanted no part in. Now she lived with him but that didn’t mean that she had to play nice by any means. They butt heads on a regular basis but things had been rather quiet today which is why she was all alone in the kitchen. At the sound of a door opening, she looked up with a groan. “Home so soon?”

Mackenzie pushed the book aside with a smirk, leaning more over the counter for him to enjoy the view. “Seeing as how this is your place, I think that would be your case to make.”
