(The question about the pronunciation of Myfanwy made me think of this, is the context--because I first started studying Welsh in my medieval history classes.)

I adore medieval literature, and I think everyone else should too. So I will tell you what I told my friends in college to convince them to seek it out:

The Mabinogion includes a premodern example of incestuous gay genderswitch bestiality mpreg. No lie. (Also Rhiannon, one of my favorite female characters anywhere. She is not involved in the incestuous gay genderswap etc.) And a zombie eagle and a woman made of flowers.

The Lais of Marie de France includes one story about a gay werewolf (okay he may not be gay but he and another guy roll around on a bed kissing, it is not a big stretch), and another about a tragic hot faerie boyfriend who turns into a falcon. Oh, and a story in which an idiot dude gets a hot faerie girlfriend and almost blows it because people are stupid, but hot faerie girlfriend shows up and thumps him over the head and then carries him off to (implied) have hot sex in faerie. One gets the impression that he is her slightly dim but well-meaning beefcake.

And this isn’t even getting into the delightful weird that is the Ulster Cycle/Táin Bó Cúailnge (about which I will say nothing except that Scáthach was a formative influence on me and has probably informed my love of such warrior women as Femshep and Cassandra).

Everyone: read medieval literature. It is rich and gorgeous and familiar and alien and simultaneously wonderfully earthy and deliciously weird. (And honestly, to tie back into Dragon Age, I think any DA fan would get a kick out of any of the above.)

(Everyone has their favorite translations. For myself, I am most familiar with the Sioned Davies Mabinogion, the Glynn Burgess Lais of Marie de France, and the Thomas Kinsella Táin Bó Cúailnge. But I am well, well out of academia at this point, and there may be better translations of any or all.)
