ace martin could kill sam in an instant, but sam has always been the insolent sort. when ace grabs him by the face, sam sneers, a lick of lightning snapping off his hand involuntarily. anger makes the electricity buzz under his skin and he wants it out.

the five missed calls on sam’s phone would agree with ace, who now stands in the doorway to his unkempt apartment looking pissed, but not sam. after the third call, he put his phone on silent, too involved in his painting to bother picking up. 

“if i wanted to answer it, i would’ve picked up.” he drags a hand down his face, groaning a little under his breath, leaving faint traces of paint behind on his cheeks. “is the world ending or something? it can’t be that serious.”

he has a bright blue fifty dollar bill folded up and tucked between his fingers. it's just monopoly money, but it was so, so important. he wasn't losing the game, but he wasn't winning either. if he could get his hands another two hotels, that might change.

he thought nobody was looking when he slowly reached over to slip out the stray fifty dollar bill sitting in the game's box. when ace calls him out, the table descends into an angry silence.

sam doesn't even have the decency to look guilty, but he does drop the bill back into the box. "you wanna talk about unsportsmanlike? talk about cat cheating at uno every fucking time we play. that's unsportsmanlike."
