It's strange to see her as a saviour. Of myself, yes, but also of our people. All our lives, it's been me in that place; behind the shield, in front of the blade, standing up and fighting until my very last breath, protecting and serving. But today, it was Viper who saved us, who tilted my head up with bloody fingers, who smiled softly, and who will face the whip of the public's words. It's there, in her hands, my body torn and broken and guilty, that I come undone.
Even if it all ended well, even if I know I won't die from my wounds, I still couldn't protect her. Couldn't save her.
Couldn't do the one thing I'd sworn my life to do.
