✧. ┊ Through Rose-Coloured Glasses, a Star Wars fanfic by Liz aka @pseudonym-lux
BREHA SOLO HAD ALWAYS SEEN THE WORLD through rose-coloured glasses. She may have been a surprise to her parents, but that didn't mean that she wasn't a happy surprise. Born in the age of the New Republic, where there was largely peace through the galaxy and the stories of evil Sith Lords and an oppressive empire were scary stories and things of the past, not so distant even as it may have been. She only knew a happy family. Parents who still loved each other and showed it, long lost twins reunited and making up for lost time. An older brother who adored his baby sister. She never knew the meaning of all things good not lasting forever, she'd never had to learn that lesson. At least, not until her whole world comes crashing down around her.
IT WASN'T HER TIME YET, THEY KEPT TELLING HER, when Breha would ask to go train with Ben and Uncle Luke at his Jedi school. At the time, it had been a sore subject, a recurring argument. But when everything crumbled around her, it was the only thing that kept her alive. Though Breha would use her dying breath to insist that Ben would never hurt her and even if she'd been at the academy, she'd have lived, it didn't change the facts. The cold, hard truth that her brother had brought the entire school down until it was nothing but rubble and flames hiding the bodies of innocent people who were only there because they had a gift. Breha wanted to hold onto the idea that it was an accident, that her uncle had disappeared for unrelated reasons, that they'd all mistaken the feeling that had rippled out across the galaxy through the Force when Ben Solo had turned to the Dark Side. It couldn't be true, she told herself, he could never do anything so bad.
IN THE YEARS THAT FOLLOWED, PEOPLE WOULD MARVEL at how Breha had seemed to lose everything but her rose-coloured glasses, how she could still look out at the galaxy and say with enough confidence to almost convince everyone else that she would get her brother back, that her family would one day be whole again. Even when she had encounters with the dreaded Kylo Ren, she would return with a smile and say to anyone that asked how she made it out alive, "He's my brother, silly. He could never hurt me, even now. He's not as big and tough as he thinks he is." For that reason, whatever it may have truly been that kept Breha alive after all the encounters with Kylo Ren that followed, Breha became one of the Resistance's most valued members. If they suspected the First Order to be behind it and that a fight with Kylo Ren might result, they would send Breha. And every time, she would return. And every time, her certainty that she would get her brother back, that he was in there somewhere, would only grow.
EVEN IF THE RESISTANCE HAD THIS ACE UP THEIR SLEEVES, it didn't mean that they were the most well off in other departments. Most of their ships were in rough shape, or strange amalgamations of two ships that they had salvaged. They were always in danger of not having enough supplies for everyone and some of their most important members were not their agents in the field, but the hunters who could go out into the D'Qar wilderness and return with enough food to feed those on base. And though morale was always changing, no one could say it was low while Breha was on base. D'Qar had two suns, experienced members would tell the newbies, Ileenium, the one that they orbited, and the daughter of General Organa, who could light up the room just by entering.
SOON ENOUGH, GENERAL ORGANA DECIDES THEY NEED another ace up their sleeve. They cannot defeat the First Order if the only trick they have is that one of their members can always get away from an encounter with Kylo Ren. Leia assigns her daughter an important job: Find the Millenium Falcon and bring it back for the Resistance.
