theo had taken to calling river to say goodnight after lights out. it always turned into a conversation, but they didn't mind. "i care about you too." ("go to bed!" khya said from the other side of the room. theo ignored his sister.) "like a lot."

it was as close to a "love you, good night," theo was willing to get. they wanted to say it; it was getting more true every time they hung out. "good night, river. see you tomorrow."

"i mean... yeah?" he chuckled, nervous. "unless you have a better idea for what's happening with this town." yako thought about it a bit more. just because he was rearing to find supernatural beings didn't mean everyone else was as well. "it might be special effects like our parents always dealt with, but with the hex bags and weird residue, i doubt it."

yako brushed his pseudo-cousin's hair out of his face. "just until you fall back asleep." being the oldest of mystery inc's kids, yako put a lot of weight on himself to be the protector for them all.

he got off the bed and sat on the nightstand next to it (not his smartest move, but he was more focused on peyton's well being). "we can talk about what got you so spooked in the morning, okay?" yako flicked off the lamp. "sleep better, peyton."

"is this about the ben thing?" he asked, instead of answering. jakke crawled into bed with his friend, abandoning his own. "i'll protect you. always. you don't have to worry about him or anyone else. because i will be there to hunt down whatever's hurting you."

(hunt down. apt wording considering his profession. for peyton, jakke would even take the job for free. no one gets to hurt his friends and live.)

yako noticed westly coming his direction and knelt to the ground to catch the pupper. "hi boy!" while he hadn't had the time or resources to take in a puppy when his father's dog had fathered a litter, yako adored westley (and blair). "who's a good boy? you are! yes, you are!"

jakke didn't notice westley until he felt something wet on his hand. looking down, he saw the dog licking. jerking his hand away, jakke's eyeline followed the leash, finding his friend on the other end. "do you have something i can wipe his spit off on?"

yako has a television show! the best way i can think to describe it is if “ghost adventures,” “destination truth,” & “buzzfeed unsolved: supernatural” had a baby. it’s a cryptozoology & ghost-hunting mashup show, with occasional guest stars of other supernatural enthusiasts or his fellow mystery gang’s kids. the show is called “spittin’ cryptic.*”

he also has a second show that he shares with several other hosts that’s basically “fact or faked: paranormal files.” people send in videos or pictures that they think showcase something supernatural (or alien, the hosts don’t judge), the gang picks the ones they want to test out, & then they split up to see if they can recreate the evidence. this show is called “prof. facts.**”

*it’s a pun on “spitting image.”

**short for professors of facts, since the show is about fact checking.
