This was only meant to be a quick stop, the island was quite small and so was the one hospital in it, so she figured she could just take the time to rest up. The weather didn’t seem to be clearing up, and it made her glad that she had decided to disembark there instead of continuing onward to a bigger island. By the time the storm actually reached the island, bringing with it a Marine Ship in bad shape and an injured crew, she ran over to volunteer her services.
They were certainly understaffed and in no position to decline help. Besides, she quickly proved her worth by aiding on the triage of the moderate cases, having a lot of experience with both field and trauma medicine. Once those were properly settled and ranked to be seen to after the critical cases, she went around aiding the nurses with the lighter injuries.
After much deferring people to other patients, the Rear Admiral finally accepted being checked herself, and Alice began with the large cut on her arm. She’d been keeping composure pretty well for that level of exhaustion, but the growing franticness in her voice exposed the cracks fully. “There’s no need to apologize.” She reassured her gently first of all, setting down her arm and moving to tend to the next cut. “In all honesty, I’m not employed here, but from what I’ve seen...” With someone like her, full of worry and responsibility, honesty worked best.
“There are enough supplies, but not enough beds. They could use more people, too. But the strategy to prioritizing the cases is solid, and so is the rotation system. Every patient has been assessed and is either being treated or in line to be treated.” The entire staff would be working over and double time, but it was absolutely within the realm of possibility that everyone would be seen to in time.
“I can promise you we’re doing the best we can.” Anything more than that would be irresponsible. “The best thing you can do now is rest. We wouldn’t want you to end up taking a higher spot in the priority scale.”
