IM GOING TO BLOW UP
I don’t think I could name 100 woman but I also could name a hundred men, or,
Actually I don’t think I could name a hundred of anything
I have panic attacks over breathing. When people mention anything like asthma or even seeing something funny and saying "I can't breathe" makes me very anxious and occasionally causes a panic attack in which I feel like I can't breathe. I don't know why it bothers me so much. And people always advise me to focus on my breathing during panic attacks but that is usually what caused it in the first place so it doesn't help very much. Is there any other way to calm down besides breathing? -Evergreen
Hi love,
Yes, there are many other ways to help relax and calm down during a panic attack! Here are some ideas for you:
Progressive muscle relaxation. Starting with your toes, tense all the muscles as tightly as you can, then completely relax. Work your way up from your feet to the top of your head.
Visualizing a peaceful, restful place. Close your eyes and imagine a place or activity that is calming and peaceful for you. Concentrate on how relaxed this place or activity makes you feel.
Guided meditation, which you can find on Youtube. (These videos may ask you to focus on your breathing, though, so be careful. You may be able to find some that don’t!)
Yoga / meditation (again, these may mention some breathing related things, so be careful, but you could probably find some that don’t!)
If you practice these things right when you start to feel anxiety riddled, you can prevent a panic attack altogether!
Here are some other things that can help during a panic attack:
Get a nice hot bath or cold shower
Get a soft blanket or soft stuffed animal and try to focus on the way it feels
Squeeze a stress ball
Go for a nice walk
Call a friend and talk it through
Drink a glass of water (or multiple)
Grounding techniques can help you focus on the present and therefore help you. Check out this link with a bunch of grounding techniques to try! http://mental-health-advice.org/groundingtech
Hope this helps,
