There have been a LOT of suicide and self harm jokes being made by my team at work lately and they're really starting to get to me.. I don't wanna say anything though and risk getting picked on. -jaw
Hi love,
Some people may call me overly sensitive, but I hate when people make self-harm and suicide jokes. It’s not funny, and you never know who might be secretly struggling with mental illness themselves. There’s so many other jokes to be made, and you can still have a good time without making suicide and self-harm jokes.
I can understand that you don’t want to say anything because you don’t want to be made fun of. But from my experience, people are usually more understanding then you think. For example, my boyfriend’s brother used to make suicide jokes and self-harm jokes all of the time. Then I told him how much it hurt me because I had personal experience with those things, and he apologized and never did it again. I was completely expecting him to judge me or make fun of me even more, but he didn’t. Most of the time people make such jokes out of ignorance, not malice. And therefore when they find out their jokes are truly hurting someone, they stop.
If you don’t want to reveal any personal experience you may have with these things, that’s completely fine. You could always tell a small white lie like, “Someone I know killed themselves so I would really appreciate it if you didn’t make suicide jokes any more.”
Could you talk to your boss about their behavior? Your boss may be able to talk to them for you, because their behavior is definitely inappropriate for the work place. Just make sure you ask your boss to keep it confidential and to not tell them it was you who shined light on their behavior.
Good luck, please keep me updated!
