Leikeili47
Artist Blog Post
Leikeli47 is a young masked Brooklyn ‘rapper.’ I use ‘rapper’ in quotes because her unconventional approach to music crosses genres she classifies her music as “communicating” not as rap. Until recently she had no Instagram and mostly interacted with fans through the Ask function on Tumblr (http://lk-47.tumblr.com/). Leikeli47 uses an unconventional approach in making her music using various sounds instead of instruments to accompany her voice. Always seen wearing a ski mask, she explains the mask as a way to de-emphasize her appearance that is so often sexualized female artist in all genres. As she describes in an interview with Vice “It distracts from everything that everybody would normally go to… what’s she look like, what’s her shape, her complexion” in these way people can focus on her music and not her appearance. She describes her mask as a place of empowerment. “When you put that mask on, its empowering. You feel invincible. She is described as an overwhelming happy, positive, enthusiastic and fun, a theme that is reflected in her music she describes her own music as “It’s the funnest thing ever.” Listening to her music, you get lost in the song. “It’s like an escape. You hear that boom bap, and you want more. It’s fun.” Any song you listen to of her’s are going to go but here are a few of my favorites.
