Full honesty, I think people are missing the points when it comes to a lot of this internet safety stuff. All this "we're banning you if you're not 18" shouldn't come down to "If I didn't have the internet as a kid I would be dead." because personally as someone who had the internet as a kid; I wish I didn't. Yes, I have awesome friends, but I also had really terrible shit done to me via the internet and the idea of "kid safe spaces" is just not feasible online.
Predators will ALWAYS find a way, no matter what you do, these current bans are going to mean nothing. I've been sent horrid things via regular text msgs from predators. It means nothing to censor and regulate things via an arbitrary age verification. Kids will ALWAYS find a way around those things and predators will ALWAYS capitalize on that.
What we really need is to start having safe spaces in real life that are actually safe again and for kids. Not places you need to spend money to be in or hangout in, places with adults that can actually be held accountable if something does happen. The internet will NEVER be safe for children under certain ages and that's always been the truth. You can beat your head against a wall trying to tell a 10 year old not to talk to strangers and be safe and mindful and to show their parents if something suspicious does happen but unfortunately children are not immune to the "I'm smarter than you and more mature than you think" disease. I was a child raised in an internet tech savvy household taught every danger under the sun, was even punished and had things taken away for the things being done to me, but I still went back and continued to have things done to me online.
If I didn't have the internet as a kid I'd have an actual life and not years of crippling trauma and mental illness that went unnoticed and unregulated because I was hiding online instead of branching out and finding a community that could actually love and support me.
You guys can have rose colored glasses about the internet and it's former child safe spaces all you want but the truth is the internet never was and never will be safe for children under a certain age and censorship isn't the answer.
