When he had woken up this morning, Kise had been little more than the son of Kaijo. The prince, the saving grace. The one who would protect them. The week will see him as the one who seals the alliance between his kingdom and the emperor kingdom of Rakuzan. He supposes it’s not something many people get to do, which does amazingly little to lift his spirits. This isn’t a place he wants to be; it’s just another iteration of his birthright and a remainder that no matter how much he does try, he is penniless when it comes to the monarch.
He is tired, despite having barely moved for most of the morning. But he had to rise early, getting prepared for an alliance of a deal he isn’t even sure he wants. Rakuzan, yes, is powerful. But is it worth his inheritance? Even before the actual alliance, there are countless traditions to be honored, rituals to be followed and worshiped to. As soon as he awakes, he’s dressed in red silk, wide sleeved and flowing like the folds of a broken rose. He’s ready and is told to awaken the princess, knowing that the alliance is to be formed with friendship. As if there is some sort of metaphor eternalized inside the depths of the deal’s wings and tradition.
It occurs to Kise he hates the word from his bones right down to his damaged blood. Tradition, something that bounds him down. Something that keeps him down from what he wants to be.
But even so, he knows it is not a good idea to argue against Rakuzan and goes to their wishes to awaken the princess. The robe he is wearing is heavy, layers and layers of silk topping on each other and he is astonished how a fabric so light and elegant can pile up such a mass of uncomfortable, yet presentable weight. He knocks once, gently on the shoji doors. The doors are pulled open by him gently and he finds himself face to face with a girl he used to know a long time. There is a lack of finesse in the way Kise slacks immediately, lips parting ever so slightly in surprise at the sight of the girl. She has changed since the last time he has seen her. She is more elegant. After all, god forbid the princess be anything less than absolute and prestigious.
❛Wenhe-sama? I have been advised to suggest to you that it is merely necessary for the princess of Rakuzan to make an appearance at breakfast.❜
