     “ But-- “

 words die on her lips as another small sob reaches her ears. golden eyes turn away from the front to her side, carefully watching the shaking form of the girl. she wasn’t making eye contact, head lowered to look at the ground, but blake didn’t need to look into her eyes to guess what she was feeling nor why she didn’t want the faunus to leave. she had only turned with the intention of at least buying the girl some tea in the hopes that it would help calm her down, but hands reaching out to grab her wrist halt her movements and a desperate plea-- please don’t go -- has her momentarily frozen. her heart lurched at the sight and the tremble in the girl’s voice, the few tears dripping onto the snow not going unnoticed. blake feared that if she did leave, it would only worsen whatever neir was feeling at the moment-- or worse, send her into a panic attack. 

     her options were limited-- she could utter a promise that she’d be right back or that the other could simply come with her to the cafe. but she doubted she wanted to go anywhere right now, to leave the lakeside and blake didn’t feel comfortable leaving her alone the more seconds passed.

         she couldn’t just leave her. not like this, not in this state.

           “-- okay.”

     quietly does she move to sit besides the girl, not too close but not so far away either. the snowy earth was cold, the chill penetrating through the fabric of her jacket and catsuit, but only a small amount. ( after all, it was made to stand up against the cold of solitas. ) turning towards the girl, blake offers a small smile, lifting up her wrist - which nier still had a grip on -- to offer her hand instead, palm facing upwards with a silent ‘ here ’ and a nod of approval. it took a few moments, but eventually the pressure on her wrist lessened as she felt her hand being held tightly instead. good-- a small step, but a step nonetheless. her gaze moves away to watch one of the lone couples skate across the frozen waters of the lake of koi, one ear twitching as a few snowflakes landed on it. 

             “ I’ll stay. “

      the fox village was perhaps one of blake’s more favored places to visit. it helped greatly to be living in the same ward, but even if she wasn’t, she’d still make the trek to the village to spend a few hours among the foxes-- talking to them, learning about them. sometimes even sketching the ones that allowed her to. today’s visit was one of the few occasions she brought someone along with her , this someone being mitsuri. the demon slayer offered to tag along and she felt no need to decline-- blake did enjoy her presence. 

 of course, the plans for the day weren’t nothing too extreme. in fact, most of it was spent perched on a stone, sketchbook in hand as she idly sketched what she saw, pausing here and there to speak to the other. the pencil moved fluidly across the paper, the lines soft and fluid. it lacked much cohesiveness, but one could tell what it was without too much trouble. so lost in her sketching she as that she didn’t notice the demon slayer before her until she felt a fingertip lightly push the tip of her nose. one eyebrow raises as the faunus glances up at the woman who simply smiled in response with a laugh.

      despite the wondering of just why she booped her nose, a smile of her own works its way onto her lips, fingers moving to tuck the pencil in her pocket as she closed the sketchbook. the faunus glances at her not-scroll Scroll, making note of the time before standing up to stretch.

    “ It’s gotten late, huh? Come on-- let’s get some dinner. “

      “ It...is confusing but not impossible to understand. “

  the concept of gods & their existence is not foreign to the faunus. back in her world, the gods once resided on earth with the rest of humanity. but, as most tales involving the divine do, tragedy and events had happened leading to the abandonment of them, humanity falling only to rise once more, and so on. and here on the island, she’s come across many who are not so easily confined to just two types of beings, neither human nor faunus. if so many kinds can exist here, who is to say that a god cannot as well? but that knowledge and confirmation is not what had her looking puzzled.

         it was learning that kurowli was such a deity that had her expression as so. 

 she’s had her suspicions that he wasn’t entirely human, but of course never brought it up. after all, he’d tell her in his own time and it’s not like she was human either. but it is something when you learn someone you consider a friend is a god. it does nothing to change how she treats him -- blake could care less about what someone was when it came to her responses towards them -- but it does add a little insight.

    golden eyes drift from his to sweep to the two owls perched in the trees above them, seemingly comfortable on the bare bamboo branches. her gaze finds the one she healed way back during the fantasia war, memories briefly recalling the panic that had overtaken kurowli at the injury. 

          “So, your owls-- are they your companions then? “

CARING FOR STUBBORN MUSES. for when the person you’re trying to care for insists they don’t need your help. – not accepting

        " I doubt it can get much worse than it already is.”

 the threat of possibly being worse off does...almost nothing to faze her. it’s not for a lack of self-preservation nor care for her own well-being. but getting worked up over the injury would do nothing and lead to nothing except just to hasten the blood leaking from it. it doesn’t hurt too badly and the feline is relatively calm in spite of the scenario. it’s not the first time she’s had a nasty gash and it most likely wouldn’t be the last. 

      it’d be nice if it was, though.

         but she relents, trading keeping her own hand secure over her forearm to holding it up, presenting it to the female to make use of whatever first-aid skills she had. blake could bandage it just fine on her own but she finds that using that as an argument never got anyone anywhere-- so she might as well save them both the time that’d be wasted doing so.  “ Just warn me if it needs stitches. “

   there’s still some...uncertainty of how to act around him. their last conversation wasn’t exactly pleasant, and blake still had questions to ask, ones only he could really answer. and there still lingered the sting from the lack of trust. 

      but, at the same time, she knows it hasn’t been easy for him. salem, the relics, beacon, haven, argus-- not to mention all the unknowns that he most likely went through in this city. part of her is upset at all that was hidden, but another part feels some sympathy to the former headmaster. that doesn’t excuse anything, nor washes away what he’s done, but it is a reminder that he is as flawed as every other person in the world and that as hard as she and the others may be on him, he is most likely the hardest on himself. 

  " Ozpin.” spoken softly in greeting as feet come to a stop next to the man, gaze flickering from the carolers to him. she had spotted him among the crowd gathered in the courtyard, hovering to the side. “ I...didn’t expect to see you here again. “

    she was never fond of thinking much of the past, of the days where she still held a childish hope and naivety. because thinking of those days often led to thoughts of the ones that followed and in comes the wondering of how it all turned out the way it did.

but those days were not always filled with shadows and doubts.they were not always harsh words and bloodied swords. Blake remembers bugging him endlessly to let her help him train, determined to prove that a bookworm can fight, too. she remembers banter that came naturally, sarcastic quips that rolled off her tongue. while others feared the strange new kid on the island, she didn't.

      she remembers the summer festival she dragged him to one evening, using the excuse that she wanted to show him something that simply could not wait. in truth, she had been worried-- news of recent faunus deaths at one of the mines had reached the island and although he said little on it, she could see how it affected him. the tension, the silence, the slight redness his eyes held-- all signs to her of suffering kept hidden. so she did her best to keep his mind off of it, if only for a night. a few hours of peace from the harsh realities their kind faced daily, a night spent playing ridiculous games and watching the festivities. she didn't know if it worked, but at the time, she didn't really care. she just wanted to try.

          but that was then.

      before everything started to feel like it was a never ending war that held no hope of victory and the weight of what she'd done in the name of a better future became too much to bear anymore. those hopes she had, that dream they shared no longer seemed attainable. not in the way that he wanted and not when she felt how she did.

      the ocean breeze soundlessly washes over her, midnight hair swaying softly. the chill from it cools her hands, yet she doesn't move her arms from their folded position on the railing. Blake doesn't know what drew her to the boardwalk that night-- she chalks it up to being homesick. this was as close to Kuo Kuana as she could hope to get from here, as close to feeling that comfort that home gave her. she doesn't know what brought him here, either nor what prompted those words. maybe he was missing the island as well, or thinking of the past.

       " ...yeah. Well-- " and she pauses, taking a moment to watch the moon's refection on the waters surface." We all have to grow up some time."
