it's always the feeling of the person off-camera that makes the shot and I really think this is one of the most potent distillations of dan's love we've ever seen. phil looks lovely. his shirt is very nice. but it's the everything of this—the eyes cast downwards which I'm sure was directed by dan, the umbrella over his head, the lights hanging around him, the rain-streaked path like a road to somewhere—that makes him more. he doesn't just look lovely. he looks like the photographer's soulmate. and he is.
