I'm a little confused about what omegaverse is??? Like I don't understand????
I’ve never actually done anything more than read omegaverse so my research on the subject isn’t that great, but i’ll do my best to explain it <3
Omegaverse is an AU so you can basically make shit up about biology and everything, but there are a few things that are usually the same in the AU.
In omegaverse, there are basically genders and secondary genders. Secondary genders are alpha, omega and beta. You can be an alpha male, beta female, trans omega etc,- basically anything.
Alphas and omegas “present”, which means that at some point in their life (late teens, usually?) their secondary gender is revealed. A person usually doesn’t know what their secondary gender will be before Things Happen lol. Omegas will have their first heat (body gets ready for reproduction, basically - their reproductive organs, resembling vaginas, start producing slick, etc) and Alphans will go into rut. Alphas usually have a big-ish cock and they can come a lot. They also have a knot, like dogs, which “locks” the omega and the alpha together and keeps the alpha inside omega longer. So, omegas can usually get pregnant (and it doesn’t matter whether your primary gender is, for example, male) in the omegaverse AU.
A person is considered a beta if their secondary gender never reveals itself. Betas don’t have any “special” reproductive organs - from what I’ve understood, beta females can have children, though.
Omegas and alphas usually have a very distinctive smell . Like, an alpha can smell if an omega is in heat and vice versa.
Omegas and alphas can bond together - usually, the alpha bites omega in the neck where the scent glans is, sometimes the omega bites the alpha back. In some fanfics I’ve read, the bitemark is very visible and both the omega’s and the alpha’s scents change after they are bonded - their scents might mix up a little. After being bonded, i think the alpha and omega can smell each other’s happiness, distress and other emotions better, too.
Alphas are usually portrayed as very possessive and dominant, in control, etc. (Like, think about wolves and the leader of the pack, the alpha wolf?).
Omegas are seen as caring, loving, sometimes portrayed as submissive and eager to please.
So, Betas resemble most like a normal person - in some fics the Betas don’t even smell and they can’t smell other people. i’ve read numerous fics where for example doctors are Betas, because they’re “neutral” - they won’t be distracted by their biology, their body’s needs or for example aggravate Alphas that are possessive of their mates.
!! BUT!! This is all just biology and tbh I really like omegaverse fics that focus on social justice rather than the characters getting tempted because of biology (bc sometimes omegas are seen as weak and nurturing and they’re often objectified) ? I mean, your secondary gender does not define you or your personality, nor should it force you to be with someone you don’t want to be with. An omega who doesn’t like alphas? That’s cool. A really dominant omega? Cool. A submissive alpha? Even better. A beta and an alpha falling in love and making it work even though they’re not compatible biologically and can’t bond the same way alphas and omegas can? Go fall in love, you lovebirds. An asexual omega who doesn’t want to share their heat with anyone and is freaked out by sex? That’s alright and i’m here to protect you.
aanyway there are a lot of fics that follow the “the submissive omega finds a dominant alpha who wants to take care of them” storyline, and it’s all cool, I promise, it’s just an au and a kink - i just personally like that, despite their genders or secondary genders, the characters are equals and their relationship is fully consensual and their decisions aren’t affected by their biology.
