Dare I ask, what's omegaverse?

oh my god i feel like my kid just came home from school and asked me what sex was.

i ain't a "give you a book and figure it out yourself" kinda mom, so we're doin this. here we go.

omegaverse is a kind of slash fic that imagines a hierarchy similar to what wolves have in which you have the dominant alphas, the neutral betas, and the submissive omegas. the universe imagines that these are biological genders in addition to male and female--known as secondary gender--and thus create a different set of social norms/hierarchy. these additional genders are referred to as "maturation," and become evident ("presentation") around the age of thirteen after having already presented as their primary gender (male or female).

omegaverse is formerly known as a/b/o, which we stopped using because it's too similar to a slur for aboriginal australians, but i thought it was important to note 'cause you'll see it around sometimes.

let me clarify before i continue that they're not werewolves. however, historically, the omegaverse originates from a Supernatural fic in which werewolf dynamics were combined with mpreg. however (and confusing that a bit), in the omegaverse there are packs as family (though this depends on the fic). and on the mpreg note, most omegaverse fic is m/m.

let's get into it with more definitions!

alphas - usually larger physically, aggressive demeanor. dominant. have ruts, in which they are periodically affected by the urge to breed--sometimes this can happen as a response to omegas having being in heat (aka estrus)--more on that later. ruts last (in my experience) 3-7 days, and the alpha cannot control or ignore their rut; the rut additionally makes them even more aggressive than usual. alphas can furthermore command and basically everyone follows the command--though nonverbal commands can sometimes be resisted (more on how they might non-verbally command later). we also uhh... gotta talk about alpha dicks later (see: knotting).

betas - literally just normal fucking people. this is also most people.

omegas - smaller physically, gentle demeanor. submissive and breedable. have heats, in which there is a crazy high chance of pregnancy, and all they want is to be bred and they act kinda stupid (literally like they can't cook or clean or NOTHING). the decisions an omega in heat makes are entirely out of desperation and not to be acted on. at the beginning of a heat, the vaginal walls ache and their body temperature goes up. but first? pre-heat! also about a week long, an omega prepares a nest where they'll feel safe; usually blankets, things that smell like loved ones, clothes, food and water. during pre-heat, omegas are totally cognizant, and may invite an alpha or beta to share their nest for their heat. after a heat, an omega is usually pretty wiped and will eat a lot--this shit expends mad energy.

gamma - pretty rare, but im explaining it anyway because they have neo pronouns??? and it sometimes isn't explained that someone is a gamma it's just assumed from the fact that the author is using ze/zer/zim. but this is a third primary gender in which someone will either mature into a female alpha or a male omega, so since the gender is unknown, they are referred to with ze/zim pronouns before their maturation. they're born with both sets of genitalia and a uterus; so they're infertile if they later present as an alpha, and fertile if they present as an omega.

there are also enigmas (literally once every generation; demeanor and physicality just alphas on steroids). deltas are literally just alphas who can't command. i haven't often encountered gammas, enigmas, or deltas in fics personally.

two of the defining features of the omegaverse are scent glands and knotting.

scent glands - residing in the base of the neck and wrists, the scent glands... well, they smell. omegas smell good, alphas are usually described as having an oppressive smell, betas also smell but it's incredibly subdued. the smell of an alpha is always more evident than others. the smell can attract a mate; closer to an omega's heat, their scent becomes gradually more potent. an alpha's smell can tell others that they're in a rut. alphas can issue a non-verbal command that can be ignored (by some people) via their scent glands.

knotting - alpha dicks have this thing very astutely called the "bulbus glandis" (creative, right), referred to as the knot. it's uhh, it's a knot on the base of their dick. basically, it inflates during sex and locks into the vaginal walls and traps the cum inside for max chance of pregnancy. this by itself is fine, but the best part is that the alpha and whoever get stuck together for a period of time. the period of time varies from fic to fic, but i've seen everywhere from 15 minutes to three hours. tbh it's fucking great, it can be really funny and unhelpful or horrible i hate you get out of me or really sweet depending on the ship dynamic. the knot "deflating" is often referred to as "the knot going down."

here's a purposely shitty example to give you an idea of what this looks like:

"i'm the omega and i'm in heat ahh i'm so horny!" "i'm the alpha and i'm in an uncontrollable rut and this omega smells so good! i'm gonna get this omega pregnant! graaaah! [aggro alpha noises]" [probably pretty kinky sex, 'cause there's d/s dynamics here, but varies from fic to fic] "the alpha came inside me and we have to wait for the knot to go down, aww nuts!" [PREGNANT]

in preperation for my omegaverse triplets fic, i wrote out an explanation of the omegaverse au, its history, and some more fun extras because im a fucking nerd and i miss high school english essays. please enjoy.

The Omegaverse: An Overview

the omegaverse is a term used to describe the alternate universe that exists in fanfiction and ficton wherein the characters have wolf-esque designations - alphas, betas, omegas.

there are stories that include social structures with more categories, but generally speaking and for our purposes, we'll just talk about the main three

ALPHAS are the top dog so to speak, and they have many physical and mental charictaristics that make them the "top dog"

alphas experience heightened levels of aggression, protectiveness, and territorial tendencies in their day-to-day life, and these feelings only increase as they approach their "rut".

an alpha's rut is when the alpha experiences high levels of lust and arousal, usually for an omega, and the alpha wants to have a lot of sex for like. a week. if not longer.

this sex also involves another key aspect of the omegaverse which is an alpha's knot. a knot is a group of muscles at the base of the alpha's cock that swell when the alpha nears orgasm, for the purposes of "locking" their ejaculation inside the omega's body. breeding kinks go brrrr

alphas secrete pheromones into the air from sensitive patches of skin on the sides of their neck, insides of their wrists, and occasionally other places on their body like ankles, the inside of thighs, etc. these patches of skin are called glands, and every designation in the omegaverse has them. alpha pheromones are generally strong and masculine in nature, often having woodsy, spiced, or other deep, earthy notes. their scents are meant to encourage omegas around them to go into heat (which we'll get to later), as well as signal their designation to the other alphas in their vicinity.

alphas are not always male, which has fun implications for storytelling and sexyfuntimes. when going into heat, male omegas will grow something of a makeshift uterus that can be accessed through their backdoor, and alphas will use it the same way they would a female omega's. male omegas stil have their male genetalia but it is usually much smaller than the alphas, and their semen has low to no fertility. conversely, female alphas will have a retractable dick, which of course is only exposed when they're horny or go into rut, and their female anatomy is usually very small, hard to get to, and rarely used. queer alpha/omega pairings are also a lot of fun to read, but for our purposes, alphas will generally have male genetalia and masculine attributes and omegas will generally have female anatomy and feminine attributes

BETAS are the next designation. They function as the "average" character, which is sometimes boring and unfortunate, but in many cases authors will choose to make the betas a necessary component of an alpha's rut and an omega's heat (we'll get to that later), by way of the beta's pheremones

beta pheromones in these cases are made to be soothing to an agitated alpha or omega, acting as a sort of balm / temporary relief to the mind-cracking lust these designations experience.

i read a call of duty fic once that had the alphas and betas working together to help the omega!reader through her heat - alphas would of course fuck her silly, and when she needs a rest, the betas bring food/water, help her shower, clean up the nest (more on that later), etc. and i like that version of betas a lot more.

betas are also not generally able to take an alpha's knot, and if an alpha chooses to go through their rut with a beta, they won't feel entirely satisfied, as the beta anatomy (wether male or female) is not made with an alpha's knot or massive size in mind

OMEGAS are made to be the beloved opposite of alphas - as there is yin and yang, sun and moon, death and taxes, so there are alphas and omegas

like the alphas have ruts, the omegas have heats, which is similar to what happens to me when i see anakin skywalker edits, or perhaps eat a really good french dip sandwich. an omega's heat is a period of extreme lust and arousal, accompanied by an instinctual craving for alphas and their knot.

when an omega goes into heat, their glands (often found at the sides of the neck, insides of the wrists/thighs, ankles, etc) will secrete pheromones that alert alphas in the vicinity to their state. These scents are often more feminine in nature, sometimes described as floral, fruity, airy, and the like.

heats are described as very hot and painful without the assistance of an alpha. excessive sweating, often accompanied by scratching at the skin or glands is common, and many omega's scents will become more potent the longer they endure a heat with no assistance.

during these heats, an omega will produce a substance called slick

slick is exactly what is sounds like - excessive lubrication of the vaginal canal and opening (or the backdoor if the omega is a male) to ensure maximum comfort as they are stretched by the alpha's cock, and more pleasure for the alpha, because who doesn't want to fuck a well of warm, gushy liquid?

now that we know the designations (sometimes also called sub-species, categories, second sexes, or other similar phrases), it's time for the rituals

NESTING

in the week or so before her heat, an omega will begin a process called nesting

this involves creating a soft, plush space full of blankets, pillows, stuffed animals, and, if they've mated with an alpha or have a specific partner in mind, they will take articles of clothing or bed coverings with their partner's scent on them, and create a space where fucking and cuddling is encouraged in equal measure. Sometimes these nests are for the comfort of the omega, sometimes they make them with their alpha(s) in mind. omegas are prickly and growly during this time, as their body is preparing for the physical exertion that a week of almost non-stop fucking will demand, and it's best to simply stay out of their way during this process. you will get bitten, you’ve been warned. 

each author takes a general liberty with the timeline of an omega's heat and an alpha's rut, but the general consensus is that heats occur a handful of times a year, usually once a season, and an omega's heat will trigger an alpha's rut. (some authors choose to treat both like a woman's period, though, so occassionally alphas will have seasonal ruts just the same as omegas have seasonal heats. While one can trigger the other, they will normally happen naturally in a vaccuum)

heats are when an omega is most fertile, so authors may choose to go with the pregnancy route, at which point the omega's heats will cease, their scent will become sweeter in nature than it was before, and pregnancy will occur similarly to human gestation.

another event that can take place during heats is marking (YAY MY FAVORITE PART)

MARKING is the act of claiming your partner or mate for life, via a bite to the scent gland on the neck, usually right before a well-timed orgasm of both or all parties involved. some works include an omega delivering the bite to the alpha as well, but the general consensus is that the alpha bites the omega. this joins their scent palattes together, letting other designations know they are mated

HYBRIDS

some authors choose to involve hybrids in ther a/b/o universes, with adds fun anatomy like claws, expressive ears, sharpened canines, tails, and the like.

HISTORY

the omegaverse was originally a concept created by the supernatural fandom, and if i remember correctly, it was a dean x sam fic. god bless the supernatural fandom - they not only gave us a/b/o but also the entirety of ao3

SUPPRESSANTS

another common aspect of a/b/o fics is suppressants. suppressants are a medication that alphas and omegas can take to surpress their heats/ruts. usually this is done in the case that an omega wants to avoid suspicion or an excessive amount of suitors, or if they want to avoid going into heat, and the same goes for alphas. i read a fic once where an alpha had such a strong and musky scent that he took suppressants for the sake of others, so they could keep a clear and professional head around him

REAL WORLD APPLICATIONS

Due to the power dynamics that naturally occur with these designations, many authors and fics will wrestle with oppression and other serious topics as they round out their version of the omegaverse, which can add many interesting plot points, especially with already defined worlds like harry potter, call of duty, supernatural, etc. be prepared as you venture forth to find many surprisingly good commentaries on real world issues like rights suppression, misogyny, queer rights, etc embedded into your kinky fics. I believe the appropriate tag here is Porn with Plot and boy howdy have i read some wildly gripping plots side dishes with my porn entrees. 

a very important note

we don’t use the term “abo” to refer to the omegaverse. It’s the omegaverse or the a/b/o phrase that i’ve been using. The reason for that is that “abo” is in fact a slur for the aboriginal people of australia, and we prefer our kinky fanfiction without real world systemic oppression, thank you very much.

Lastly, the omegaverse alternate universe has no rigid rules, just as fanfiction has no declared commandments, but of course there are broad similarities across works. some authors choose to have their characters engage in very animalistic behavior, such as stalking, growling, chasing, primal hunter/prey scenarios, etc. i prefer these dynamics because i’m a little freak. Some prefer to keep it very humanoid, which is fine i guess whatever i dont read those. All that to say, theres a little something for everyone in my opinion, and i think the omegaverse is a great addition to fanfiction as a whole.

What is the Omegaverse?

A world where there are not only males and females but also alphas, betas, and omegas. This is considered the second sex.

Alpha, Beta, & Omega Characteristics

Alphas- Born with good figures, brains, and physiques. They are naturally charismatic and/or posses leadership qualities. They tend to have high positions within society. Many hold political power and influence. They experience a rapid mating season called a “rut” during which they desire omegas in heat and can become more violent. They carry pheromones that differentiate them by class, have a high sperm count, and have a high chance of reproduction with omegas. ( α )

Betas- For the most part these are normal humans. Within the overall population they are considered the most common. They generally marry other betas in which case would be extremely likely to produce more betas. Since they are so average they are typically used by the alphas but if they work hard enough they can marry an alpha and gain recognition in society through them. They do not go into heat/estrus but do get turned on by an omega’s pheromones and unlike the alphas, they can maintain control over reason. ( β )

Omegas- Regardless of whether they are male or female, the can become pregnant. They experience regular mating seasons that interfere with their usual lives (school and work), resulting in lower positions within society. They produce sex pheromones and go into estrus for seven days every month. During estrus they are extremely fertile. ( Ω )

Division of the Population

20% Alpha

70%  Beta

10% Omega  (male omegas being the rarest)

What is Estrus?

The first time estrus happens is between the ages of 12-18. The same goes for an alpha’s heat.

An omega’s hormones produce sex pheromones that are mixed in with their sweat and bodily fluids. Alphas and betas do not produce these pheromones. During the month a large amount of omega hormones accumulate within the body. During estrus, the large amount of hormones are converted into sex pheromones and released. It is said that the pheromones smell sweet. This release of pheromones continues for approximately seven days (period varies). This is a special process for omegas to seduce the alphas with a high fertility rate.

When alphas sense the omega pheromones they suddenly go into heat. Once in heat all conscious thought is abandoned and they may possibly become violent with the intention to breed the omega.

The Mate System & Pairing

When having intercourse during estrus the alpha will bite the omega near the back of the neck and the two become “mated”. The bite mark will be permanent. For an alpha there are no changes. But to an omega, if they are mated during estrus they become unable to have sex with partners outside of their mate. If they have sex with other partners, dizziness, headache, and vomiting will occur. It is unheard of to reverse a mating. There are times when an alpha and omega’s pheromones (unrelated to estrus) attract each other. For them, they feel it at first sight and will definitely fall in love with each other. However this is a rare case called “soul bonding” and many consider it to be an urban legend.

When alphas and omegas form a unique connection they are called a pair. A pair is formed when an alpha bites an omega’s nape while having sex during heat/estrus. Once a pair is formed an omega will only go into heat for their alpha and if an omega has sex with anyone but their pair their body will go into extreme shock. “Fated pairs” also exist, where both people will be strongly attracted to each other the moment they meet.

As mentioned in the graphic, collars are used by omegas who wish to protect themselves from an unwanted alpha bite. 

Heat Prevention Medicine

There are various medicines which suppress mating periods and pheromones available. Typically, omegas are encouraged to regularly take medication throughout their heat periods if they do not have a mate/pair or risk being at the mercy of any rogue alpha that catches onto their pheromones. 

NOTE: This is not my original content. It is a compilation of what I have read from omegaverse manga. There are always variations and differences between each author/mangaka’s omegaverse but generally it is something along these lines. If you wish to go in depth I encourage you all to look into omegaverse manga. Typically it is BL or Yaoi manga and it can get graphic so reader discretion is advised.

can you explain more of the roles/personalities of betas, like by themselves, roles in relationships, or in friendships, or in just situations involving alpha(s) and omega(s) ? i am new, and interested to learn more about them.

Betas are described as being the most like regular human beings, with the main differences being that they can (usually) still pick up on scents and the like, tend to have a lower position on the food chain than Alphas, and generally tend to take care of/protect Omegas.

Beta’s have the advantage of not having a heat or rut cycle, which would mean that in modern times at least they would be considered much more reliable employees than Alphas and Omegas because they wouldn’t need scheduled time off a week or so every month for heat/rut.

Bonded Betas are sometimes a thing, usually a childhood friend or particularly trusted Beta that provides care and protection for one or more Omegas. Kind of like a bodyguard. This might seem like more of an Alpha-suited job, but given that Beta’s don’t have ruts to worry about, that makes them better suited for unbiased guardian roles. They’ll more likely to become attached if they want to, not because of extreme pheromone release beyond their control.

Sometimes Betas can pick up on scents more or less the same as the other dynamics. Sometimes their senses are more dulled. Other times Betas are almost exactly like regular humans and possess no keen sense of smell at all.

I'm a little confused about what omegaverse is??? Like I don't understand????

I’ve never actually done anything more than read omegaverse so my research on the subject isn’t that great, but i’ll do my best to explain it <3 

Omegaverse is an AU so you can basically make shit up about biology and everything, but there are a few things that are usually the same in the AU. 

In omegaverse, there are basically genders and secondary genders. Secondary genders are alpha, omega and beta. You can be an alpha male, beta female, trans omega etc,- basically anything. 

Alphas and omegas “present”, which means that at some point in their life (late teens, usually?) their secondary gender is revealed. A person usually doesn’t know what their secondary gender will be before Things Happen lol. Omegas will have their first heat (body gets ready for reproduction, basically - their reproductive organs, resembling vaginas, start producing slick, etc) and Alphans will go into rut. Alphas usually have a big-ish cock and they can come a lot. They also have a knot, like dogs, which “locks” the omega and the alpha together and keeps the alpha inside omega longer. So, omegas can usually get pregnant (and it doesn’t matter whether your primary gender is, for example, male) in the omegaverse AU. 

A person is considered a beta if their secondary gender never reveals itself. Betas don’t have any “special” reproductive organs - from what I’ve understood, beta females can have children, though.

Omegas and alphas usually have a very distinctive smell . Like, an alpha can smell if an omega is in heat and vice versa. 

Omegas and alphas can bond together - usually, the alpha bites omega in the neck where the scent glans is, sometimes the omega bites the alpha back. In some fanfics I’ve read, the bitemark is very visible and both the omega’s and the alpha’s scents change after they are bonded - their scents might mix up a little. After being bonded, i think the alpha and omega can smell each other’s happiness, distress and other emotions better, too. 

Alphas are usually portrayed as very possessive and dominant, in control, etc. (Like, think about wolves and the leader of the pack, the alpha wolf?). 

Omegas are seen as caring, loving, sometimes portrayed as submissive and eager to please. 

So, Betas resemble most like a normal person - in some fics the Betas don’t even smell and they can’t smell other people. i’ve read numerous fics where for example doctors are Betas, because they’re “neutral” - they won’t be distracted by their biology, their body’s needs or for example aggravate Alphas that are possessive of their mates. 

!! BUT!! This is all just biology and tbh I really like omegaverse fics that focus on social justice rather than the characters getting tempted because of biology (bc sometimes omegas are seen as weak and nurturing and they’re often objectified) ? I mean, your secondary gender does not define you or your personality, nor should it force you to be with someone you don’t want to be with. An omega who doesn’t like alphas? That’s cool. A really dominant omega? Cool. A submissive alpha? Even better. A beta and an alpha falling in love and making it work even though they’re not compatible biologically and can’t bond the same way alphas and omegas can? Go fall in love, you lovebirds. An asexual omega who doesn’t want to share their heat with anyone and is freaked out by sex? That’s alright and i’m here to protect you. 

aanyway there are a lot of fics that follow the “the submissive omega finds a dominant alpha who wants to take care of them” storyline, and it’s all cool, I promise, it’s just an au and a kink - i just personally like that, despite their genders or secondary genders, the characters are equals and their relationship is fully consensual and their decisions aren’t affected by their biology.

So I know Alpha's mark omegas, and omegas could mark alphas (via scent/returning the bite) but what about beta's? especially if one did an alpha, beta, omega poly?

This is actually a good question, because we see so little fics focusing on the Beta dynamic.

Betas still have their own unique scents, something that is personally them and the overarching identifying smell that lets other dynamics know that they are a Beta. So I would imagine that they can still scent/scent mark things, territory, significant others, those they wish to court, etc…just because they’re not Alphas doesn’t mean they have no right to attempt to court who they want.

I know that the whole biting thing in heat/rut/claiming as mates thing is usually not painful for Omegas and Alphas in most lore you come across, as heat/rut usually has some trigger that changes painful stimuli into something pleasurable because they’re already having a hard enough time being in heat/rut. It’s part of the whole heat/rut is painful and a nasty process unless or until you’re with a partner or your mate. When a heat or rut is spent with someone, it’s generally a much nicer time.

But Betas don’t really have either of those cycles, so I’m not sure if they have the same chemical trigger that would translate the pain of a claiming/mating bite into pleasure. Or if it would really just hurt like hell? I guess it would depend on how you worked the lore.

If Betas don’t have a heat or rut cycle, maybe one of their benefits is that they can still take a claiming/mating bite without it being agonising, as long as it’s someone they’ve courted/feel strongly for??

In terms of Betas being able to mark others with their own bite of claim, I expect they’d be able to do that easily enough. As long as the circumstances were right, they could mark another Beta, Alpha, or Omega with a claiming bite. I assume it would happen while an Alpha was in rut or an Omega was in heat, to lessen the chances of pain being felt in the one being bitten. But I’m sure Betas could mark their mates/partners with bites and scent about the same as others. Maybe they’d have some differences. The shape of teeth could vary between Betas and Alphas, more animalistic in the Alpha gene than the Beta gene. And Omegas would probably leave smaller marks since they tend to be on the smaller side. But who knows? You can have variations, where the Omega is larger and the Alpha is tiny. And I’m sure enormous Betas are a thing.

In terms of an Alpha/Beta/Omega relationship, I’d assume that each person would just have two claiming marks. One from each of their mates. So the Alpha would have a Beta’s mark on one side of their throat, and an Omega’s mark on the other. Then the Beta would have an Alpha’s and Omega’s mark, and the Omega would have an Alpha’s and Beta’s mark. It doesn’t have to be the throat, it can be wherever the heck you want. But that’s the simplest way I could think to explain it in a vaguely visual way.

Ruts are essentially heats for Alphas. Kind of. It’s anenhanced fertility cycle where, like in a heat, there is an overwhelming desireto mate.

Basics:

An Alpha specific cycle.

Generally the time when an Alpha is the least in control oftheir more animalistic side.

Very susceptible to Omega scents during this time.

Generally overrun with the desire to bang everything insight.

Generally a rut will pass regardless of whether an Alphamates or not, but in some cases an Alpha cannot achieve orgasm on their ownduring a rut (in much a similar way to when an Omega cannot orgasm alone duringtheir heat, if that’s the route you take with your lore).

Sometimes an Alpha only has to form a knot (aka orgasm abunch of times while successfully forming a knot) in order for their rut tofade/pass. Other times they must physically mate with/knot someone.

Generally, it’s a miserable time to have a heat or rut on your own because it’s harder to find relief and often takes longer for the cycle to pass.

They have to be vigilant at keeping themselves away fromothers so as not to go too crazy. An Alpha in rut is not going to be able toremain in control of themselves around an Omega. Or around anyone, really. With emotions running high it would be easy to get worked up in a bad way around just about anyone.

Alphas are typically more aggressive during their rut.
