Hunny: "If *I* was in charge of the Tangled Series writing - rejoice, I know - I'd-"
Me: *bursts out laughing*
"Hunny, lemme stop you right there! First of all, you respect women. If you made too many guys and no women, and someone pointed it out, you'd go oh, shit, and FIX IT!"
Hunny: "Yeah, this is a sausage fest..." =/
Wait, another angle-- So I joked years ago about shiny glowing rocks falling from the sky & corrupting almost-girlfriends into attacking their crushes, becoming hellbent on destroying the world. But, 17yo goofy side-character Joey? As soon as he heard Mai was upset about even just feeling left out, he immediately apologized. Like, s04e01 (or e02, cuz I think that's when she actually enters). 19yo young world leader Rapunzel? Can she admit she was wrong? ...ah, nope. Under a gag order, but still. 😩 I know everyone knows & agrees how & why the storytelling suffered in s3, but sometimes it still shocks me to see what stories DID get similar things right.
The animation of the final proposal is beautiful, the framing is perfect, but...
By then, we knew that, to the creator, "Will you marry me?" really meant:
"Will you stop having adventures?"
"Will you stop having fun?"
"Will you never travel again?"
"Will you settle down & be shackled with a mundane & boring existence ever after?"
"Have you finally had enough 'freedom' already?"
...
...
So the whole dialogue just makes me sick. 😭
I can't rewatch the last proposal scene. =/ It, like... actually makes me feel gross. =/ I suppose it is personal, but for once not about my own engagement...
By having Rapunzel be the only one who can be right, have to be 100% right, and everyone else has to be completely wrong & not the least bit right -- *shudder* Really, does no one else feel that it was our worst nightmare from the premiere, come true after all? Rapunzel's [CHRIS'S] attitude for the premiere & therefore the tone for the whole show, was that marriage is The End. The end of your life, your freedom, your travelling anywhere.
"I'm not asking her to throw her life away and settle down! I'm just-"
*regrettable realization that that's EXACTLY what he's asking; not that it'll stop or change anything or ever be addressed again, even in the episode that should've been all about that* [God I feel sorry for his daughters.] The final proposal... A lot of stills & gifs, & any fanart, is okay & very pretty. But I can't stand that last conversation. Because it's all meant to show that, SEE?! Rapunzel was right! This is the end! Now she's had her allotted quota of allowed "adventure," found & fulfilled her "destiny," her life is now sufficiently OVER. Now she no longer needs that freedom; it can be gone (to where???) Now she never needs to go anywhere outside of Corona really, or do anything adventurous. Because she always had to be 100% right, so she was never allowed to grow beyond changing her own progress going from "not yet" to "yes." So all her fears? 100% correct. In the end? Proven 100% correct. Engagement & Marriage are here. That big satisfied "Yes" at the end? Makes me sick... You're marrying Disney's most perfect of perfect men, but:
FUN IS DEAD.
(...said no fan or artist or fic writer ever🙄) If you like it and can write your own headcanons over it, go right ahead; makes no difference to me. I know most people do to some degree anyway. But I just can't stomach it.
Could we recruit new people to the fandom?
Maybe!
If some people could stop emotionally arguing for & against characters as if they are sentient beings, & not just play pieces in this huge mismatched pieces-missing sandbox, where Chris's own canon cannot even reconcile with itself to make 100% non-contradictory cohesive sense!
If you are trying to argue in-world, then try to present it as in-world! But most of what I've seen looks like it is not meant to be in-world.
Example:
Rapunzel ignores Eugene's feelings! She's awful. We shouldn't support her. I hate her & everyone who likes her.
...vs...
Daaayum, who decided to portray Rapunzel as ignoring Eugene's feelings? Perhaps this will become a plot point addressed later on... *is never addressed* ...Well, that was stupid / bad writing / a ball dropped / higher ups being idiots / 😒chris.... Therefore: I don't like this show & will leave it alone.😊 OR. I'm going to headcanon [blah].🤗
.
Anything else was either a poor attempt at creating a grey-area situational conflict, or just plain poor storytelling.
.
Once anyone starts "taking sides," you've lost.
