drabble: Walls Closing In [part 2]
Starlight stepped into the “Day Room” of the mental hospital and saw mostly ponies gathered together, some reading, some doing puzzles, others playing chess, and talking. There was a fair number of them. She gulped when she noticed they only had wrist bands on and no chains. The nurse beside her steadied her as she shook.
“I don’t know if I can do this.” she gasped.
Memories of the Underground came crashing down on her. It wasn’t often she and the other mares and female creatures were huddled into a common room like this but it happened sometimes and when they did they weren’t given much to do. These conditions were much better. But they had wristbands with numbers on them like this.
The difference was a name. Not a ward number and a code.
“Come on, Miss Glimmer. You have to sit down.”
“I’m scared. I think I’m having a panic attack,” she told the nurse. Can I have my anxiety medicine?”
“You’re not scheduled for any medicine right now.”
She winced. She was used to taking it now when she had panic attacks and her whole body revolted against the idea of not having that medicinal crutch.
“WHAT?!”
She looked around and saw a particularly loud stallion who winked at her and that was it, she turned and began to run down the halls only to find herself face to face with a steel door. She then felt her arm grabbed by the nurse, who pulled her around and gestured to cameras.
“Listen. You’re not the only sick person here. You need to stop crying and suck it up or they’re not letting you out of here any time soon. You’re being monitored. Everything you do. Crying is a sign you’re not ready to leave.”
“That patient was leering at me!”
“We’ll take care of it. In the mean time you need to get. It. Together.”
Starlight stood floored by this harsh dose of reality. She allowed the nurse to lead her into the day room. Luckily the stallion from earlier was no longer there, removed for being ‘unruly’ and Starlight sat alone in a corner with some cards, playing solitaire with herself. But she could not stop crying. The other patients stared at her and asked “What’s her problem?”
