I believe Mike and Will already share the basement at the start of Season 5

I posted recently about the Casa Byler pic. I just want to go on record saying that I think the most likely sleeping arrangement is:

Joyce gets a guest room

Jonathan gets Mike's room

Mike and Will share the basement

(Thanks to @smalltownshrimp for suggesting where the boys go)

First, the writing necessities of a first episode and a large time skip require showing, very efficiently, how things have changed. And that requires showing that Mike and Will are Season 2-style best friends again.

I don't see how it would make sense for Mike and Will to be as distant as they were at the start of Season 4, after eighteen months of living together. They can only be close again.

I think the chaos the Byers bring into the home, plus the fact the house wasn't designed for eight, means that they'll play up how crowded the house feels, perhaps to comedic effect. We already see that happening in the breakfast photo. We might see people arguing over the shower, etc. (And people bumping elbows at that crowded table! I can already see Will shying away after accidentally bumping Mike...)

This means some people have to share rooms. And Mike and Will share the same room. It makes sense: they're best friends after all, and are old enough to probably stay up late to do homework, watch movies, play games, etc. But what makes even more sense is that Mike is concerned for Will because he feels Vecna's presence. And he won't allow anyone but himself be by his side. :'(

There are many reasons writing-wise to have them share the same room. They'll be "a team" this season. The Forced Proximity Trope leads to potential romance. They need a room to have heart-to-heart conversations. And we know from Noah that most of his scenes are with Finn this season.

And The Painting (dum dum DUM!) will likely be framed on the wall.

Joyce definitely gets her own room. (I'm guessing that a respectable middle-class family can afford a house big enough to have a guest room for when family visits.)

And I think Mike and Will end up in the basement because Jonathan gets Mike's room. They're there for 18+ months; this isn't some short stay, so Mike moving into the basement is a minor inconvenience. Many people think that Jonathan and Nancy would share the same room. I'm guessing that's not true because it takes some liberal parents for the 1980s to allow your kid to have sex in your own house when they're not married yet. (Nancy even snuck in and out of Joyce's home in s3; the Wheelers are probably less permissive.) Plus, this is the excuse to put Mike and Will in the same room together! (I just don't see Joyce living in the basement, and Mike's bedroom does NOT look like it can fit two people comfortably!) However, I'm ready to be proven wrong.

There's some lovely irony in the fact that the Wheeler parents' desire to keep their kids "moral" by separating Jonathan and Nancy could lead to "the boys" doing some very "immoral" (i.e., gay) things lol.

The basement is a great place to get s1 vibes back, with Mike and Will playing D&D with the Lucas, Dustin, Erica, and Holly. (And Will's painting is perfect decor for a D&D den!)

(EDIT: The thing that gives me most doubt is the BTS photo with what Mike appears to be in his bedroom with a Star Wars poster on the wall. He might keep his room while Jonathan and Will take the basement. But STILL the overall idea could happen: Jonathan sneaking into Nancy's room and Will's nightmares/torment being the occasion for Mike to end up by his side anyway...)

(EDIT 2: There also might not be a guest bedroom for Joyce. Which makes it more likely that Mike and Will need to share a room!)

If eighteen months almost certainly pass with no romantic development between Mike and Will, they are probably settling into their old friendship, playing D&D, Nintendo, etc. Will will be so happy! I just realized how excited I SHOULD be about the fact that they'll be doing best friend things! There might be an explicit callback to Will's idea in the Rain Fight and the van scene that they spend the rest of their lives doing precisely this.

And Mike and Will in the same room would make possible what I'm guessing is Season 5's opening scene: Will waking up from a nightmare of his time in the Upside Down that, like the partial flashback of El's time in the lab at the start of s4, only tells half the story.

And Mike is nearby to make sure he's okay.
