historical fruk... fuels me. it's what keeps me going when the world seems dark. these two understand each other better than anyone else, much to their annoyance.
i mean, they still loathe each other but in a sexy frenemy way that involves lots of moonlit trysts during the Peninsular War while their armies sleep. i love imagining Francis fidgeting nervously as he accompanies Napoleon and his marshals to Spain, desperate to murder Arthur but maybe also... give him lil kiss... and then there's Arthur who's thirsty for blood but also some French dick... they’re awful. i love them.
in my headcanons at least i think they only became an official couple around the time of the entente cordiale (however, they didn't consider this a big development. they just didn't bother hiding the romantic side to their relationship anymore but they still fought excessively, only without the bloodshed).
anyway, The Green Flash from the Pirates of the Caribbean 3 soundtrack is my go-to Age of Sail FrUK daydream music. the two of them... chasing each other over oceans... flirting and fighting aboard their ships... capturing the other and then letting them go just to do it all over again... that's LOVE babey!
historical usuk is at its PEAK in world war 2. my brain has linked porteng->fruk->usuk and made these ships as awful as possible, but i shall not elaborate on that now. i was talking to a friend @shadygrovegarden a while ago about how we think world war 2 was their "honeymoon period". elaborating on this, i think these two work best when they've got a common enemy and in peacetimes they fight A Lot (not to say that they don’t fight a lot anyway). the commencement of the Cold War and Alfred's newfound obsession with Ivan was to the detriment of his relationship with Arthur, leaving the two to drift apart to the point where they unofficially broke up. they still worked well alongside each other though with some delicious angst where Arthur is hurting deeply and Alfred has no idea there’s even a problem.
