Generation 2???
....They won’t live forever. Well, except Janus. (Sorry Jan)
I agree w/ you. I've loved Sansa, Cat, and Arya since Book 1. Imagine my surprise when I visited worg and other fansites for the 1st time & saw all the Sansa&Cat bashing/pitting the sisters against one another/misogynist language/victim shaming. It was intense. It affected me negatively. Tbh it kinda tainted my experience of the fandom. I stopped reading metas for quite sometime for my sanity. Now I mostly read positive fanfics w/ NO Sansa/Arya/Cat (or Jeyne) bashing
Yeah I am definitely with you Anonny!
I had read all 5 books and watched the first few seasons of the show before I ever got into fandom… And it was a rude awakening for sure!
One of the things that shocked me the most honestly was just how acrimonious people interpreted Sansa and Arya’s relationship to be, and just how much people focused on it. I really didn’t think that much about it when I was reading the books tbh. Sooo much happens to both characters and they interact with so many other characters that it just wasn’t something that stood out to me that much. Like, if you would have asked me what I thought the most important parts of Sansa and Arya’s narratives were, I doubt it would have even been in my top 5. But then I started getting into fandom and it seems to be one of the most talked about/debated topics. Same with the “Cat was a bad/abusive mother to Jon” argument. Sometimes it can be really interesting and enlightening to get into fandom and see what other people pick up on and what they think is narratively important… But yeah, it can also be really negative and disheartening.
And yeah, meta is another thing that I learned the hard way to be really careful with in fandom. It can be easy to fall down the meta rabbit hole and get caught up, and it can be really frustrating when the meta you are reading just doesn’t resonate with you at all… But it’s really important to remember that with meta in regards to literature, while it’s supposed to be an academic and unbiased approach generally, is still just one person’s interpretation of the facts as they see them. Calling something meta doesn’t automatically make it infallible.
seeing people shipping shinobu with....her killer......is interesting
i'm unnerved by the recent tumblr announcement to ban nsfw content, it reminds me of the ffnet purge in the worst ways. are you and other folks in the brick fandom on any other platform as well? i'd hate to lose touch with the fandom in case my blog gets accidentally deleted or if a lot of people such as artists leave the site. but twitter is so unsuited for any sort of discussion or meta, idk.
Yeah, it’s worrying!
I’m PilferingApples on Dreamwidth, Pillowfort, Discord and Twitter too. I don’t really use those platforms ever because Tumblr is , frustratingly, still the only site that lets me do all the multimedia stuff I want to do. But I suppose if we actually see a purge of accounts, I’ll end up going wherever people settle :/
