How exactly does Ezra keep managing to get in touch with Hondo?

Are they staying up late texting each other? (oh my force what are they texting about I must know)

Is Ezra just answering C'Raigslist on the holonet and it's just always Hondo?

Do Ezra and Hondo have a podcast and Hondo just brings up his harebrained schemes after recording?

The hard-tyred Ferrari at least formed a useful barrier to the advancing Norris for a few laps. But eventually the McLaren driver found a way past Leclerc. That was Lap 52 of 57 and it only took a couple more laps before Norris was right with the Mercedes, which by now was giving Russell all sorts of challenges.

“The biggest one was the brake-by-wire,” Russell recalled. “The pedal was hard at one corner and would be going to the floor on the next. I had no way of knowing as I approached the corner what I was going to get.”

The brake-by-wire and DRS systems had reverted to passive mode, meaning they needed to be armed manually. In the case of the brake-by-wire, it meant that unless Russell manually reset the system every time he used the brakes, he would get rear braking only from the small discs and without any of the reverse torque of energy recovery through the MGU-K.

This not only reduced braking capacity but also wildly changed the brake distribution between front and rear.

The systems team at Mercedes were finding a number of work-arounds and Russell was receiving instructions, all while defending from the attacking Norris. There is only one back-up button on the steering wheel – and it has to serve multiple functions.

One of the functions was the radio and as Russell pressed it believing it to be the back-up for the radio, it was in that moment set for DRS. Russell realised immediately he had inadvertently used the DRS outside of the DRS zone and released it “after less than a second”, taking care to back off momentarily to ensure no advantage had been gained.

In the meantime, as Russell’s car was missing from the timing screens because of the transponder issue, the team had no way of knowing where Norris was in relation to their car.

Russell was warned that he might be about to lose what few dashboard functions remained – which would have meant no change-up lights, among other features.

So, he was preparing to change up by judging the sound of the engine. In the end, the lights remained functional as Russell successfully repelled the McLaren – in what was an impressively disciplined performance.
