I'm rewatching Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and I've just gotten to the episode that features this exchange:

KIRA: Incoming transmission. [He's] sending over a document. EDDINGTON: It's a book. One of my favourites. Les Miserables. SISKO: Thank you, but I've read it. EDDINGTON: Recently? If not, you should read it again.

Absolutely unhinged thing to tell somebody. Although the episode (deliberately?) draws on the misconception of the book being About the obsession Javert has for catching Valjean, I choose to believe it was a space-PDF of a completely unabridged version of the story, digressions and all

sflkjsdfld Thank you for sharing. I've seen out of context screencaps of this episode and the dialogue is truly powerful. I know nothing else about what happens in it beyond that there's a line where one character says "Les Mis isn't about the policeman," and they were so real for that.

Dropping this here for Asian Les Mis Week since I recently learned that one can share these things on Tumblr, too! Dunno if I’ll finish it before the week’s out, but the start of it is here at least! Les Mis AU set during the 1980 Gwangju Uprising in South Korea, focused on Les Amis.

Letter from Nantes to unknown recipient

18 July 1789

Since Thursday, we have been in a state of incredible turmoil here over the news of M. Necker’s dismissal. All business has been suspended. The citizens have taken up arms. A guard of 300 men has been established, which both married men and young men take turns manning day and night. A picket was also immediately set up at all the royal treasuries to prevent money from being taken out, with orders to the collectors not to embezzle any funds. The Provost’s, the Domains, the Capitation Tax, the Hearth Tax, the Inspection, and everything else are all under guard. A guard has been posted at the city’s powder keg, and a detachment has been sent to seize the one in Paimbœuf. Everyone has signed up for the Citizen Guard, regardless of social status. All the rifles found in the city’s various stores have been confiscated.

A delegation of the Young Men of Rennes came here to inform us that there were 8,000 men in their city ready to set out, and that the three regiments stationed there had promised not to fight against the people. Based on the head-count done so far, we are pleased to see that we can count on more than 30,000 men of good will who are fit to bear arms.

We have established a guard of 150 horsemen, which patrols the streets day and night to stop and search everyone entering the city. Yesterday, a rumor spread that troops were approaching; our patrols went out four leagues to ask them about their intentions; and if they do not explain themselves clearly, we must prevent them from entering the city, set up cannon batteries along the roads, and block their path with barricades while the citizen militia assembles to oppose their entry.

It was decided to seize the castle as a precautionary measure; the royal coffers were seized in Rennes, Laval, Le Mans, and Angers; this was the only means to subdue the aristocrats. I believe the same was done in Bordeaux. A meeting has been called here for 10 p.m.

Combeferre：The man gazing at the sky

"While Combeferre was raising a wounded man, he received three bayonet thrusts through his breast; he cast one last look toward heaven, and breathed his last."

Obviously, this painting references the original Les Misérables—the scene of Combeferre's death.

I particularly love the colors in The Night Watch and Liberty Leading the People, so I used them as references. I also drew inspiration from "Masquerade," one of my favorite songs from The Phantom of the Opera. In the book, their deaths all feel absurd and grand, yet they end just as absurdly—even Combeferre's death is brushed over hastily. But this kind of ending, without grand fanfare, though silent, is deafening.

The highlight on Combeferre isn't based on much logic; it's simply because the Chinese translation of his name, "公白飛," contains the character for "white" (白), so I thought it suited him perfectly.

I really enjoy the sense of motion in certain famous paintings—where every figure, whether protagonist or secondary, has their own business to attend to. Though I may not have fully achieved that, I still tried my best. Combeferre is helping up a wounded soldier; the soldier on the far left intends to stop him, not knowing whether he means to save or harm the injured man. When he later realizes Combeferre is trying to help, he moves to intervene—but is killed by one of the soldiers. Beneath that soldier lies a wounded young man. Behind the soldier who kills Combeferre, Enjolras is fighting another soldier, watching his closest friend die before his eyes, while the soldier seizes the moment to stab the man behind him. An old man, seeing the soldier attack Combeferre, tries to step over Courfeyrac—who lies on the ground, trying to hold him back—but is struck from behind by another soldier with a short sword, never seeing it coming. In the background, a soldier is quietly carrying away his friend, who is part of the rebellion. There are three already dead in the painting, and two more will die in the very next moment. I particularly love this sense of absurdity and chaos.
