Every time I hear "I'll Cover You" I remember how I'd wanted Kurt and Blaine to sing it when they moved (when they were finally both in) to New York. And then after the New York arc started, I liked to imagine that they had sung it when Blaine moved to New York - Kurt as Angel, Blaine as Collins, of course - cause it does kind of fit "we never talked about moving in" perfectly.
live in my house / i'll be your shelter / just pay me back / with one thousand kisses…
cause it's a sweet song, but it's 'live in my house' - whose home is it!? - that creates problems-to-come. Loving each other and thence moving in together may not seem to need examination, but one person moving into the other’s home could very well screw up the dynamic!
open your door / I'll be your tenant / don't got much baggage to lay at your feet
ahaha. (no baggage.) haHA. That is what they go into it saying and hearing, though.
… but sweet kisses I've got to spare, I'll be there…
and that part is true <3.
just slip me on, i'll be your blanket, wherever, whatever, i'll be your coat
feels especially relevant to a pairing to whom clothing and fashion has been so significant, and - especially! - looking forwards to the wordless outfit-picking-out bit in YMMFSY
you'll be my king, and i'll be your castle, you'll be my queen, and i'll be your moat
again, looking forward to the power struggles and how those are related to wanting to give protection - or not need it - in Tested! So Relevant.
i think they meant it / when they said you can't buy love / now i know you can rent it
And a little looking forward, too, to the non-permanence of this arrangement (how they will break up before s6) that neither of them know about at the time, though arguably the seeds are there…
with a thousand sweet kisses, i'll cover you, oh, lover, i'll cover you
All that said! And it was a lot. The song mostly is SWEET. And loving. (And an iconic gay love song from musical theater, too, imo.) So it would've been fairly appropriate, even without all the foreshadowing, and with it would've become only more so.
