it's a week into january, the start of a whole new year. the weather is suddenly warm. i can go outside without immediately getting a migraine in 15º weather. i wear a dress for the first time since thanksgiving. i tear up four separate times on my walk to a cafe. i am listening to a favorite album & texting a best friend & gripping the hand of a fictional character who pulls me into the ability to hope again. i am breathing in & out, big deep breaths as i walk across the same bridge that felt like a threat just three weeks ago. the sky may be grey, but i still see sunlight streaming through the big front window. i am still broken & still breaking but today i'm also warm & excited & happy. what a strange emotion, tentative like a fawn in the woods. i sit across from it & thank it for its company.
